Plastic is taking over the world! By Aliza Amiel

Over 7 billion pounds of PVC are thrown away in the U.S. each year. Only 18 million pounds of that, about one quarter of 1 percent, is recycled. Every year, Americans use approximately billion plastic bags, creating tons of landfill waste. Plastic bags do not biodegrade.

Crazy facts that will make you change your mind about using plastic!  In the Los Angeles area alone, 10 metric tons of plastic fragments—like grocery bags, straws and soda bottles—are carried into the Pacific Ocean every day.10 metric tons of plastic fragments  Over the last ten years we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century.  50 percent of the plastic we use, we use just once and throw away.  Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times.circle the earth four times  In the Los Angeles area alone, 10 metric tons of plastic fragments—like grocery bags, straws and soda bottles—are carried into the Pacific Ocean every day.10 metric tons of plastic fragments  Over the last ten years we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century.  50 percent of the plastic we use, we use just once and throw away.  Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times.circle the earth four times

What Plastic Does to Animals in the Water Plastic toxins end up in fish, which end up on our plates, which end up inside our bodies. Sea turtles and other marine creatures mistake plastics and other garbage as food (such as jellyfish) and ingest it. This mistake causes blockages within their digestive system and eventual death. Over one million seabirds are killed by ocean pollution each year. Three hundred thousand dolphins and porpoises die each year as a result of becoming entangled in discarded fishing nets, among other items. One hundred thousand sea mammals are killed in the ocean by pollution each year.
