3. In the Pacific ocean – If you were to scoop cup of water the ratio of plastic to plankton is 6-1 – Americans throw out 694 plastic bottles per second. That’s 60 million a day! Over time, plastic becomes brittle and breaks apart into tiny pellets called “nurdles” or “mermaid tears.” Wildlife that eat the pellets can sicken or die.
