Born into Slavery He had little promise for his life Went to work carrying sacks of grain to the plantation’s mill. first exposure to education was from the outside of school house near the plantation After the Civil War, Booker and his mother moved to Malden, West Virginia. Booker's mother noticed his interest in learning and got him a book. In 1866, Booker T. Washington got a job as a houseboy for Viola Ruffiner Mrs. Ruffiner understood his desire for an education and allowed him to go to school for an hour a day during the winter months.

In 1871 Booker T. left home and walked to Hampton Normal Agriculture Institute. He convinced the administration to let him attend and took a job as a janitor. He was later offered a scholarship from the headmaster of the school. Booker T. graduated in 1875 with very high rankings. He returned to Malden and taught at his old grade school. In 1879 he spoke at the Hamptons Graduating ceremony. He was later offered a position teaching at the Hampton.

Granted an honorary masters degree from Harvard University in 1896 Granted an honorary doctorate from Dartmouth College in 1901 the first major oceangoing vessel to be named after an African American house where he was born in Franclin Virginia, was designated as the Booker T. Washington National Monument. High schools, middle and elementary schools across the United States were named after Booker T. Washington.
