California’s Desert Region The desert region is the hottest region in California. This region is nicknamed “The Old West” because of its heat. The 3 main deserts are the Mojave, Colorado, and the Great Basin Desert, but borders Arizona and Nevada. Because of its high temperature and not much water, only certain plants and animals can survive in this region.

California’s Central Valley Region The Central Valley region is a large flat piece of land and is 40-60 miles wide but is about 450 miles (720 km) long. This region is the world’s most productive area. This is because it has the most richest soil. It receives over 20 inches of rain per year. There are approximately 2.6.5 million people living in the central valley region. The central valley region has trees that are 160 million years old. These trees give us fruit that we need to survive.

California’s Coastal Region California Coastal Region is also known as the Golden Coast. This region has four areas; the North Coast, San Francisco Bay area, Central Coast, and South Coast. California coast runs about 800 miles from north to south. Most of the coast is rocky. This region also has two groups of islands which are: the Farallon Island and the Channel Island. The Northern Coast gets a lot of rain. The redwood trees which are the tallest trees in the world can be found in the northern coast. The Southern Coast doesn’t get as much rain but it has warm summers and cool winters.

California’s Mountain Region The California mountain region is large and enormous. It covers about half of the state. There are two mountain ranges in California: one is called the Cascade Range and the other is called the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The Cascade Range is shared by two other states- it goes through Oregon and Washington. The Sierra Nevada is located north to south of California and borders Nevada to the west. Yosemite Park can be found her and it is also the home of Ribbon Falls. Ribbon Falls has the longest waterfall in North America. There are also two volcanoes: one is called the Mount Shasta and the other is called Mount Lassen.
