B. The 1 st People in the Middle Colonies 1.New Netherlands- (called New Amderdam) 1 st owned by the Dutch in 1613 used as a trading post to trade furs with the Iroquois gets conquered by the English Gets renamed New York and New Jersey

2. Pennsylvania- charter given to Quaker William Penn, wanted to make a safe place for Quakers Had freedom of religion And representative self-government
C. Social Life in the Middle Colonies Very Diverse colony Made up of lots of people with different religions People from many different countries
Religion Had freedom of religion Many different religions; Quakers, Catholics, protestants, Presbyterians, Baptists
D. Government in the Middle Colonies 1.Royal Government- colonies ruled by the royal governor who represented and reported to the king 2.Proprietary- granted by the king to a person or family to govern as they wanted typically- could make their own laws and assign officials
3. Representative Government- people elect their officials to make their laws
E. Middle Colonies Economy 1.Grew large amounts of staple crops: wheat, barley, and oats 2.Some raised livestock 3.Trade was VERY important 4.Traded the crops using the Hudson and Delaware Rivers 5.They were many indentured servants
E. Middle Colonies Climate Nice climate Rich soil-great for growing Coastal lowlands Appalachian Mountains Lots of harbors, bays, and deep rivers
Women’s Contributions Women ran farms and businesses, such as clothing stores, drugstores, and bakeries. Some were nurses and midwives. Most worked primarily in the home. Married women managed households and raised children.
