New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania make up the Middle Colonies
New Netherlands, Led by Peter Stuyvesant, Becomes the Fur Trading Capital of the Colonies
Using the Patroon System, and the promise of religious freedom, many cultures began to settle in the Middle Colonies

4. Start Spreading the News
England, Under the Duke of York, looked to kick the Dutch out of the New Netherlands to Expand Territory
After New York is established, Proprietors would set up New Jersey as a place for diversity
Soon the Dutch, Swedes, Finnish and Scottish people would move to the Middle colonies

5. Earth Quakers
Quakers move to the middle colonies for religious freedom
Persecuted for their “Strange” beliefs, the Quakers begin to settle in the middle colonies
William Penn Joins the Quakers and is given land that would become Pennsylvania and welcome people of all religions and cultures

6. Penn Station
Penn turns Pennsylvania into a colony with a representative government and religious tolerance for all
Even the capital, Philadelphia, becomes a symbol of tolerance
Penn also sets up Delaware as a colony of religious freedom

7. Bright Lights, Big Cities
With a great climate, and fertile soil, the middle colonies become perfect for Staple Crops like wheat barley and oats
While slavery existed, indentured servants heavily populated Pennsylvania
Big Cities, like New York City and Philadelphia, soon grew in importance

8. Gender Equality?
New York City and Philadelphia become important trade cities
With the limitations of laws and customs, women became more important in the economy as they ran farms, businesses and practiced medicine
Women also ran the household wile trying to make money by selling goods like butter or services like washing clothes
