WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands WYG Environment Introduction to Waste Management Seminar Paul Burr - Associate Helen Coulthard – Principal Consultant WYG Environment - Sustainability Team

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands Key Aims of the Day Bring together key speakers to: Introduce key waste management concepts e.g. Waste Hierarchy Get you thinking about your waste from a different perspective Understand the legal requirements for waste management Provide you with tools and advice to help you improve and measure progress Link you in to the support available within the region Give you ideas as to suitable areas of expenditure for Fenland GBC grant funding Think about collaborative waste solutions for Fenland GBC members Get you started on the journey to zero waste to landfill/zero waste

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands The Waste Hierarchy

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands Elimination of Waste: Some Thoughts… What level of sales increase would you need to generate the following savings (e.g. at a conservative 20% of annual expenditure)? Based on a £5,000 annual waste spend Looking to achieve a saving of £1,000 At 5% profit margin = £20,000 increased sales Is this easier than winning new business? Savings deliver year on year (like perfect repeat business) Importance exacerbated by increasing costs (e.g. waste disposal, landfill tax, materials purchases) Are your profits going out the door in skips/bins?

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands Reduce: The True Cost of Waste Easily Identified Costs Hidden Costs Cost of original materials purchased Cost of replacing materials Labour costs Energy costs Cost of disposing of waste items

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands Reuse Can you use it again? Can your neighbours use it? Can you swap your waste for theirs? Would they like your pallets for their products, do you need their cardboard for packaging up your products? Does a charity need it? Can you get the original company to accept it back? Remember disposal is always the last resort….

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands Recycling Recycling is an increasingly popular option for dealing with waste. Recycling will reduce only disposal costs. Re-use and recycling are often confused. Re-use will cut both purchase and disposal costs. Approximately 70% of office waste is recyclable, however on average only 7.5% of office waste reaches a recycling facility. Recycling costs less than disposal, particularly if you segregate your waste and have room to store larger volumes.

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands Why Manage Waste? Good for the environment by reducing: Material use – finite natural resources Landfill/waste disposal Emissions - less pollution Good for business: Process efficiency, cost savings and competitiveness Enhanced brand and reputation – get your Green Business Award Addresses stakeholder concerns e.g. customers Staff morale/satisfaction Safer working environment and tidier site

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands Analysis of Waste Streams Measure waste disposal by weight and cost Detailed waste stream analysis: Skip by skip, bin by bin approach Over time – busy periods, quieter periods, seasons? Links to plant/equipment maintenance? Link to teams/individuals/shift patterns Link to processes/product lines/suppliers/raw materials? Trace back to source – always ask ‘WHY’? Tackle using Waste Hierarchy approach Remember disposal is always the last resort….

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands Are you Getting the Best Deal for your Waste? Waste pricing is constantly evolving Everyone is aware of the massive changes in metal prices over the last few years, but what about other areas? Typical waste paper increased from £60 per tonne (March) to £65 in April Computer Paper has also increased from £170 to £180 Plastic prices have remained stable over the previous months varying between £120 and £220 for plastic bottles, and higher for plastic film. Are you constantly negotiating your contract with your waste provider? The better prices are achieved with larger volumes What about a Green Business hub for recyclates?

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands How can you Change your Hierarchy?
