Purpose of a Conclusion The purpose of a conclusion is to: provide a sense of completion emphasize the importance of the thesis leave an impression on the reader

Introduction Conclusion How to write a strong conclusion  Use a transition word or sentence.  Connect the conclusion to the introduction and thesis.  Restate the thesis without being redundant.  Encourage the reader to think, feel, or act in response to the ideas presented.

Methods of Conclusion A basic concluding paragraph acts as a summary. In the conclusion, the author simply restates the thesis and summarizes the main points. More sophisticated conclusions encourage the reader to think, feel, or act.

Methods of Conclusion 1. Call to action: Encourages the reader to do something about the topic. 2. Question: Leaves the reader wondering about something related to the topic. 3. Recommendation: Makes a recommendation or presents a solution to the issue discussed in the essay. 4. Prediction: States a prediction related to the topic.

Writing Task Below is a sample writing scenario followed by a sample introduction. In the slides that follow, we will look at various methods of conclusions that can be used with this prompt. Writing Task: You have read articles on kids and healthy eating habits. Write an informative essay explaining the importance of eating well during the teenage years. Introduction: Teenagers grow and change significantly during this stage of life. Eating well is critical during the teen years. Healthy food fuels the body to support these rapid changes, energizes teens, and helps even out moodiness. Healthy eating habits build strong, capable adults.

Summary Essentially, eating well leads to living well. When teens eat the right food, they have the energy to deal with the physical and emotional challenges they face. Healthy eating habits are an important part of growing up.
