In the evening Colin goes to get some potatoes to trade (barter) for some wheat from their neighbor Patrick

Finds potatoes have been diseased by blight Colin goes in and tells his family; they worry about how they are going to pay rent( the end of the month is time when they pay and it’s the June 28th ) the landlord comes warning them they have 3 days to pay rent (with potatoes; Colin does not tell him they have been diseased ) Landlord comes back and tells them they have to pack up and are going to be evicted because they couldn’t pay rent Landlord tells them that he can pay for their tickets and trip to Canada where they will have a much better life; they accept his offer Potato diseased by blight Being Evicted

2 days later They get on the coffin ship which is very crowded All the McGuire's but Colin get quite sick from how unsanitary it is and the boat rocking back and forth Run low on food after 4 weeks/ have to start cutting down on food intake Son sees two men throwing something over board/ finds out it’s a body Last two days run out of food They finally make it to Grosse ile to wait until they are clear that they are healthy ( they take 4 days to clear that they are healthy) go find land in Ottawa Coffin ship crowdedness

one of their neighbors is an African- American free slave and his name is Garmo; he was born into being a slave he tells stories to The McGuire’s of what it was like and how he was whipped, how we was auctioned off, How his master would make him do errands for him but Garmo would have to use this pass to run errands for his master How racist his first master was. How when he was working at this plantation one of the other slaves tired escaping to the free states but slave hunters came and took him back because of the fugitive slave act and underground railroad. He also explains how he would move from safe house to safe house and work his way up to Canada in order to not be captured and brought back like the other slave which he did successfully with the help of Harriet Tubman who helped Garmo escape. How they would hide if slave hunters came looking for them (below) A safe house

Colin gets a job for the HBC He gets offered to go on a voyage and before his voyage he meets a native woman named Jaci who teaches Colin some survival tips and guides him around the village and teaches him how to hunt Jaci talks about her marriage and how it was only to help bond the relation between the HBC and the natives Jaci also tells Colin about what jobs she has to do like finding and preserving food, and her skills at making clothes, especially moccasins and women also made snowshoes, repaired birch bark canoes, and helped as interpreters, guides and negotiators) Colin leaves for his first voyage with the HBC (that was going to take 2 months) Everything was going well during the first month of the trip The HBC in the 1870’s

During one night when they settled for the night everyone was having a good time and they were drinking (Colin gets drunk) Colin wanders off and gets lost He survives a storm encounters a bear and sprains his ankle He was lucky enough to come upon a abandoned hunters cabin where he stayed for 3 days to regain energy and get lots of sleep A week later he is starting to recognize some of the area he is in because it is where they first left for their voyage and he knows what way to go it’s just a matter of time before he gets there. Voyagers settled for the night The cabin Colin would of stayed in Natives and the Voyagers interacting

When the rest of the people who were on the voyage get back one guy goes tells his family that Colin got lost and didn’t come back so they had to leave him so they could make it back before the storm started/ family is worried and sad and don’t think he will ever come back

2 months later the McGuire’s hear a knock on their door and it is Colin who had finally found his way back and survived because of what the native women taught him to do When Nora opens the door and Colin is standing there Falling Action When gets back and he has lost a lot of weight and finds out his son is getting married in 2 weeks to a girl named Mandy Akins His family missed him very much and are glad he is safe now

Colin goes to find Jaci the women who helped him gain useful survival knowledge to thank her and tell her how grateful he was to gain that knowledge and that it saved his life What Jaci would of looked like
