“There’s four kinds of folks in this world” Who said it and why?

Jem says it when he has matured and understands how society is racist and how people do not associate with people of other classes.

“…Jem was not thinking of budging” Who said it and why?

Scout’s mind (Narrator) thinks it when Jem does not go home after Atticus tells him to during the mob scene.

“Jem felt his age and gravitated to the adults” Who said it and when?

Scout’s thinks it when when the family is visiting Finch’s landing and Jem goes off with the adults, leaving her with Francis. Jem knows he is maturing, and instead of having himself just mature with the lessons he learns, he is actively trying to mature.

“…it’s because he wants to stay inside” Who said it and why?

Jem says it when he has a realization that society is cruel and prejudiced.

“How can you hate Hitler so bad then turn around and be ugly about folks right at home” Who said it and why?

Scout says it after Miss Gates says she dislikes what Hitler is doing in Europe during “Current Events”. This is a big moment for Scout because she is starting to grasp onto the idea of prejudice and racism.

“I’m too old for that, son” Who said it and why?

Atticus says it when Jem inquires about Atticus playing football with him.

“She tempted a Negro” Who said it and why?

Atticus says it when he is referring to Mayella and how she acted towards Tom Robinson.

Tom Robinson says it when he is talking in court about how he fled the Ewell house when Mr. Ewell showed up during the time Mayella was seducing Tom.

“You makin’ fun o’ me agin, Mr. Finch” Who said it and why?

Mayella Ewell says it when Atticus asks her about having friends, and she is insulted because she has none.

“No answer.” When is this written in the book?

This line is written when Atticus is asking Mayella questions but she is not responding because she is cracking under the pressure.

“What you want Lula?” Who said it and why?

Calpurnia says it while at Church with the kids when Lula. She talks strangely because he wants to fit in and not be an outcast because of her higher education.

Dill says it when he is sad that the world is corrupt. He wants to be a clown that laughs at everyone else to show people how much it hurts to get made fun of.

“He doesn’t show it much but it tears him to pieces” Who said it and why?

Aunt Alexandra says it when she is referring to Atticus and how he feels towards the injustices of the world and Tom Robinson’s case. Despite her racism, Alexandra cares for her brother and hates seeing him upset.

“His food doesn’t stick going down, does it?” Who said it and why?

Miss Maudie says it when she is baffled that the ladies in Maycomb can sit in Atticus’ house and criticize him whilst eating his own food. Miss Maudie sticks up for Atticus and Alexandra ends up thanking her.

“Miss Caroline, he’s a Cunningham” Who said it and why?

Scout says it when she is trying to explain to Miss Caroline that Walter Cunningham is poor and cannot afford lunch.

“Which way did he go, Miss Caroline?” Who said it and why?

Little Chuck Little says it when Miss Caroline freaks out that there is a mouse in the room. As Scout puts it, Little Chuck Little has a lot of patience with all living things.

“Sit back down, please, Burris” Who said it and why?

Miss Caroline says it when she is trying to get Burris Ewell to sit down and behave when he says he should be sent to the second grade because he’s gone to the first day of class every year for four years.

“So I had no chance of comparing it to other teaching techniques” Who said it and why?

Scout thinks it when she is trying to compare the Dewey Decimal System to other ways of teaching, but can’t due to the fact that she has had no other teaching techniques.
