2 Pre-reading:  Point of View: the story is told by the pov of a six-year-old girl. We see the world through her eyes; this is to accent her growth / loss of innocence.  Setting: Maycomb Alabama In other words, it is the deep south during the depression era. This means poverty and prejudice are to be expected.

3 Themes  Prejudice  Social, racial, any other difference.

4 Characters  Scout Finch: otherwise knows as Jean Louise Finch. She is six years old and the protagonist of the story.  Atticus Finch: Scout’s father. He is a lawyer and a single parent  Jem Finch: Scout’s ten-year-old brother.  Dil: Charles Baker Harris: a boy from Meridian Mississippi who does not have a father and comes to visit every summer.

5 Characters  Miss Maudie: She is the next door neighbor who is a kind woman who plants flowers all the time.  Miss Stephanie Crawford: the town gossip; foil to Maudie; in the screen play, she keeps Dil.  Miss Rachel Haverford: keeps Dil in the book  Walter Cunningham Sr: father of a poor family in Maycomb; they are farmers, and his son is an acquaintance of Scout.

6 Characters  Bob Ewell: foil to Atticus Finch  Tom Robinson: accused of a crime  Boo Radley: a reclusive boy who lives in the neighborhood; lies are spread about him.
