Scout’s older brother He is four years older He gets irritated with Scout at times Scout is his “partner-in- crime” Likes the fact that Scout is not “girly” Is sensitive to prejudice Prejudice-preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience

5 Atticus Finch Scout and Jem’s father He is a lawyer
Comes from Finches Landing He is a widower He tries to raise his children without prejudice in a town that is extremely prejudiced

6 Calpurnia The Finches Housekeeper African-American
Acts as a mother figure to the children Lives a dual life Exists in both the white and colored worlds

7 Charles Baker (Dill) Harris
Nephew of Miss Rachel Haverford Finches neighbor Comes to stay with his aunt in the summer From Meridian, Mississippi Imaginative Abandoned child Mother sends him from relative to relative

He made her get in trouble with the teacher Jem invites Walter to lunch Adds insult to injury for Scout Scout insults Walter and is punished by Calpurnia

This is Burris Ewell’s third time for the first day of first grade He is filthy and has lice He is told to go home and wash his hair with keorsine He almost gets into a fight with Little Chuck Little He insults the teacher

16 Reaching a Compromise Scout does not want to go back to school
She is upset because she can’t read at home anymore Atticus and Scout reach a compromise They will read at home and not tell the teacher

17 Walking in Someone Else’s Skin
Atticus believes that the key to understanding the situation, a person must put himself in the other person’s place He must stand in the other persons’ skin and walk around in it Makes Scout look at the situation from Miss Caroline’s perspective

Scout finds two sticks of gum in the tree She chews the gum Jem finds two Indian head pennies He keeps the pennies They believe that it might be some kid’s hiding place

Act out scenes from Boo Radley’s life Roll in the tire Their goal for the summer is to get Boo Radley to come out and meet them

22 Miss Maudie Atkinson Neighbor of the Finches Lives across the street
Does not gossip Is a female version of Atticus Kids go to her for advice She is a mother figure to Jem, Scout, and Dill

23 A Note for Boo Jem and Dill decide to put a note on the shutter of the Radley House Note is asking Boo to come out Dill and Scout act as lookouts Atticus catches them Tells them to leave the Radleys alone
