Your 4-H Demonstration Augusta-Richmond County 4-H University of Georgia Extension 1

What is a 4-H Demonstration ?  A speech on the topic of your choosing! Any topic you are interested in or currently participate in. (NO food or Celebrities!)  5 minute speech with posters & visual aids 1

How to Pick a Topic  Something YOU want to learn more about  Any topic YOU are interested in  Hobbies  Activities  School projects

Sample Speech Format  Introduction ~ 30 seconds  Body ~ 4 minutes  Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  (Maybe) part 4  (Maybe) part 5  Conclusion ~ 30 seconds

Parts of a Speech  3 parts  Introduction  Body  Conclusion 2

Introduction ~ 30 seconds  Your main topic & summary of major points  An interesting fact, story, or joke about your topic  Why you chose that topic  Always include your name 3

Body ~ 4 minutes  3-5 paragraphs  This is where you tell all the facts or “how to’s” of your speech  Expand on 3-4 major points 4

Conclusion ~ 30 seconds o Summarize your main points o Reconnect the main points with the title poster and main topic o Avoid Poor/Overdone Conclusions (Are there any questions, now you know..) o The final statement is important. Use a strong statement, fact, or quote, or even challenge your audience in the conclusion of your speech. This will leave the audience intrigued about the information you have given them, and curious to find out more. 5

Don’t forget the Posters  All posters must be full size (NO TRI-BOARDS)  Preplan in pencil, & make sure they are all standing the same way  You must have a title poster; 2-3 others are helpful.  Use key words/statement not full sentences  Make headings larger than points, & use only easy to read fonts  Use maps, charts, graphs, diagrams, and pictures as needed  All words and pictures must be large enough to see from the back of the room; usually around a font size depending on font  Try to use only 2-3 colors, choose dark colors for words and titles  Do NOT roll your posters! Use a trash bag with a draw string to carry and protect your posters 6

Giving Your Demonstration  Practice! Practice! Practice!  Write your speech on numbered index cards  Face the audience & look UP!  Be pleasant, a smile goes a long way  Speak Up, you want to make sure everyone can hear you  Stand straight and no hands in pockets!  Try not to read your speech, that’s where the practice comes in useful! 7

What are you Scored on? 8
