Summer Slide [online Image] AUIBigB#imgrc=WZtWVi8NvnWftM%3A May 30, 2016 Ending Summer Reading Slide Quaker Hill Elementary

Summer Reading Slide: What is it? What happens when children don’t read during summer vacation?  Some will lose more than two months of reading achievement.  Summer reading loss is cumulative.  By the end of 6th grade children who lose reading skills over the summer may be 2 years behind their classmates. -Cooper, Nye, Charlton, Lindsay, & Greathouse (1996) -Hayes & Grether (1983)

Benefits of Summer Reading Heyns (1978) found summer reading was the ONLY summer activity related to improved reading achievement. Students who read during the summer usually maintain the reading skills gained during the school year. Some students INCREASE their reading skills when they read during the summer, including fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Ending Summer Reading Slide Access to diverse and interesting books Opportunity for students to choose books to read Supports to ensure students keep reading during summer

Access to Books: Providing access to books for ALL children is essential to stimulate reading during summer vacation months

Students Choosing Books When children are given the opportunity to select books to read, reading gains almost DOUBLE those of children whose books are selected by someone else. (Lindsay 2013)

Supporting Children During Summer Reading Parents can serve as “reading partners” for their children, rather than “reading taskmasters.” Summer reading programs that encourage adults to “co-read” with children and provide reading guidance, show that children make even more gains in reading skills and reading motivation compared to book lending programs without this adult guidance. -Whitehurst, Arnold, Epstein, Angell, Smith & Fischel, Kim & White, 2008
