SOCIALIZATION AND THE SELF!

THE FUNCTIONALIST AND CONFLICT PERSPECTIVES ON SOCIALIZATION How do functionalism and the conflict perspective explain socialization?

FUNCTIONALISM STRESSES THE WAYS GROUPS WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE A STABLE SOCIETY. EX: SCHOOLS AND FAMILIES TEACH CHILDREN THE SAME BASIC NORMS, BELIEFS AND VALUES

Conflict perspective views socialization as a way of perpetuating the status quo. People are taught to accept their social class.

SYMBOLIC INTERACTION George Mead and Charles Cooley developed it. They said society helps determine who you are and it is less reliant on biology.

COOLEY DEVELOPED THE CONCEPT OF SELF-CONCEPT Self concept is an image of yourself as having an identity separate from other people.

LOOKING-GLASS SELF Is an image of yourself Based on what you believe others think of you

BECAUSE THE LOOKING GLASS WE USE COMES FROM OUR IMAGINATIONS, IT MAY BE DISTORTED!

SIGNIFICANT OTHERS ARE THOSE WHOSE REACTIONS ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO OUR SELF-ESTEEM PEERS, SPOUSES, PARENTS, ETC

AS HUMANS, WE CARRY ON SILENT CONVERSATIONS. WE THINK SOMETHING TO OURSELVES AND RESPOND INTERNALLY TO IT. WE PREDICT THE FEELINGS AND BEHAVIORS OF OTHERS.

ROLE TAKING IS ASSUMING THE VIEWPOINT OF ANOTHER PERSON AND USING THAT VIEWPOINT TO SHAPE THE SELF-CONCEPT. This causes us to anticipate (expect or predict) what others will say. Ex: Asking a girl to Homecoming

ROLE TAKING HAS THREE STEPS! IMITATION STAGE: YOU IMAGINE YOURSELF (2YRS) PLAY STAGE: YOU BEGIN ACTING IT OUT GAME STAGE: MORE PARTICIPANTS AND YOUR GAME IS TO GET THE PARTIES TO FIT TOGETHER. YOU ANTICIPATE THE ACTIONS OF OTHERS (BASEBALL)

THE “ME” AND “I”
