Topic 4 – Managing People Lesson Objective: To understand the different approaches to staffing To understand the recruitment process

Advantages and disadvantages of flexible working Last week you were asked to come up with as many advantages and disadvantages of flexible working as possible Lets go through and share what we found as a class

Task You should have completed the question from the sheet you were given last week please have this ready to hand in with your name on

C) DISTINCTION BETWEEN DISMISSAL AND REDUNDANCY

Dismissal vs redundancy Dismissal Worker may be dismissed or fired from a job for: – Absenteeism – Gross misconduct (showing up drunk) – Theft of company money or property Worker is not entitled to a payout from the business if dismissed Redundancy Worker’s job no longer exists possibly due to lack of business or restructuring Redundancy is sometimes: voluntary – where some staff close to retirement take voluntary redundancy to gain a payout’ Compulsory redundancy is where a member of staff must leave a job

D) EMPLOYER/EMPLOYEE RELATIONSHIPS

Employer/Employee Relations When someone gets a job a relationship begins between the employer and the This relationship is important as it can have a direct impact on the employees welfare and the businesses performance Relationships between employer and employee can be difficult due to conflicts of interest over; – Rates of pay – Introduction of new technology – Flexible working – Work conditions The relationship that exists can be shaped using two approaches – individual or collective bargaining

Individual approach Individual approach to bargaining This means the worker and the manager sit face to face to discuss terms and conditions of the workers contract This may include pay, hours, or responsibilities The advantage of this method is there is no compromise because it is just the views of one worker being discussed The disadvantage is the manager might not take any action following the discussion as its only one worker

Collective bargaining This involves a representative of all the workers meeting with the manager to discuss terms and conditions (usually pay) of employment May be a union rep who speaks to the managers The advantages is representatives speak for all the workforce so have greater power to get action If collective bargaining fails then there may be strikes, sit ins or work to rule The disadvantage is some companies (Like Dell) don’t recognise unions, and its not an individual view being expressed so not all workers will agree. Video herehere

Collective Bargaining Do some research into the advantages and disadvantages of collective bargaining Create a factsheet that HR could offer staff to give them an informed choice about whether they should join a union or not You should include the benefits and drawbacks of being in a trade union as well as an explanation of what they are and what collective bargaining is

Homework Your homework is to have a go at answering the Nando’s question you have been given You should use the attached mark sheet to help you plan your answer and should then write your answer up ready for me to mark Next week I want you to submit both your plan and your written answer

Glossary – Make sure you have key term cards for these terms Collective bargaining; A union representative will speak to the management on behalf of all the workers in a business, usually about working conditions or pay Multi-skilling; An employee is trained to do more than one job, for example an electrician is trained to plaster walls Homeworking; Employees work from home to save commuting time and give them work life balance Part-time; Employees work less than 35 hours a week but still get sick pay and work benefits Temporary; Employees are hired on a fixed term contract, to finish building a housing estate for example Zero hours; Employees are called into work only when they are needed, they get no work benefits and cannot be guaranteed work Flexitime; Employees can start and finish when they need to as long as their work their 35 hours and the job gets done

Recruitment process I want you to do some research into the typical recruitment process that a company will go through There are GCSE books at the front to help you, alternatively you can use the internet You should identify the different stages and what happens at each stage. You should also find out who is involved at each stage
