About this presentation This presentation is based on: Kristen Wilson, “The Knowledge Base at the Center of the Universe,” ALA Library Technology Reports 52, no. 6 (August- September 2016) (forthcoming). https://journals.ala.org/ltr/issue/archive Report is complete, should be available in August Believe it will be open access after one year.

Agenda The center of the universe Building a knowledge base KBs and LSPs Innovations Collaborative KBs

The center of the universe My soapbox about KBs

What is a knowledge base? Structured data describing an institution’s collection and how to access it. At the most basic, a knowledge base includes: Titles Packages Holdings A knowledge base usually contains global and local data (but not always)

Add GOKb, Bacon, ERDB-JP, Innovative

KB OpenURL MARC records Discovery ERM

KB Linking Catalog Discovery ERM Resource sharing Acquisitions Identity management Usage statistics Inventory management APIs Linked data

When it goes wrong Missing titles Titles listed in error Conflict between coverage and publication dates Incorrect identifiers (ISSN, ISBN) Incorrect use of identifiers Incorrect coverage information Incorrect embargo information

“ ” Yvette Diven, Proquest This metadata can be a byproduct of something that a provider does. If they’re focused on publishing e-journals or e- books, this metadata can be a byproduct rather than the main product. ”

“ Oliver Pesch, EBSCO For things to function properly—acquisitions and circulation and discovery and linking and usage and all of those pieces—you need to be consistent in how you talk about the resources that are in your collection. And the best way of doing that is to have some fairly rich central knowledge base in the middle that, if nothing else, is acting as an identity broker. ”

Jonathan Blackburn, OCLC “ Jonathan Blackburn, OCLC The assumption we came to this with is that the items in the knowledge base, whether they’re titles or collections, should function just the same as anything you’re purchasing. ”

Innovations

Titles (journals and books) Traditional KB data Titles (journals and books) Packages Platforms Holdings

Titles (journals and books) Enhanced KB data Titles (journals and books) Packages Platforms Holdings New content types Change management IDs, not strings MARC records Relationships Transparency

APIs and Integrations API=Application programming interface Sets of tools for building and interacting with software applications

Steve Oberg, Wheaton College “ Steve Oberg, Wheaton College It’s how to leverage all of your investment in your knowledge base, to reduce duplicate work and make sure your access is consistent. You want to make sure that whatever path users choose, they’re able to get to your resources. To me the knowledge base is the key part there. ”

Library specific holdings

Collaborative knowledge bases

“ Ross Singer By tapping into the power of the entire community—from the beginning of the publishing chain to the end-user—the knowledgebase becomes self-sustaining and finds new and interesting uses along the way. “The Knowledgebase Kibbutz,” Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship 20, no. 2 (2008): 85 , doi: 10.1080/19411260802272776 ”

Qualities of collaborative knowledge bases Users can contribute and/or edit content Data is freely available and easily reused Emphasis on improvements across the supply chain
