Online instruction has grown dramatically over the past five years. Academic courses predominate in on-line enrollments, but there is substantial variation among the colleges

The Social Sciences, English and Arts & Humanities account for almost half of all on-line enrollments

Students enrolling in on-line classes are more likely to withdraw before the non- penalty drop date. For the academic year the % of withdrawals from ‘credit’ classes before the non penalty date were as follows: 37.4% in regular classes (on-campus and off-campus) 37.4% in regular classes (on-campus and off-campus) 45.0% in on-line classes 45.0% in on-line classes

And those who do remain are less likely to complete those courses successfully

There are substantially different patterns of online enrollment among ethnic groups. African Americans and White students are larger proportions of on-line students than among the traditionally enrolled.
