1 in 4 adults will experience a mental health problem each year 1 in 10 children will experience a mental health problem Approximately half of all lifetime mental illness starts by mid-teens and three quarters by the mid-20s. The scale of mental health problems

Why focus on stigma and discrimination? Viewpoint survey (2008, Institute of Psychiatry) 91% of people using mental health services across five mental health Trusts experienced discrimination Stigma Shout Findings (2008, Rethink Mental Illness) 3,000 service users and 660 carers. 87% reported actual or anticipated stigma and discrimination

The impact of stigma and discrimination Stigma and discrimination affect all areas of life The top five life areas were: Friendships and social life - 55% Workplace - 54% Family life - 51% Dating and relationships - 33% Health services - 32% 41% of respondents said they experienced stigma or discrimination every day, every week or every month Source: 2011 survey of 2,700 TTC supporters

The impact of stigma and discrimination Stigma and discrimination can be life-threatening and life-limiting 60% of people said that stigma and discrimination are as damaging or more damaging than the symptoms of their mental health problem 35% of respondents said that stigma had made them give up on their ambitions, hopes and dreams for their life 27% said stigma had made them want to give up on life “People’s lack of understanding and unfounded fears can be just as destructive as the mental health problem itself.” Time to Change Facebook fan Source: 2011 survey of 2,700 TTC supporters

Run by two partners: Funded by: £16m£4m Time to Change Phase 2 October 2011 – March 2015

Phase 2 outcomes Improve public attitudes by 5% Reduce discrimination by 5% –Reduce the number of areas of life in which people with mental health problems experience discrimination Improve the confidence and ability of people with mental health problems to tackle discrimination Improve the social capital of people with mental health problems

Key plans New project to address stigma amongst children and young people New £2.7m grant fund for 75 community-led projects to deliver social contact (25% for groups within BME communities) Social leadership – growing the movement of people with lived experience tackling stigma and discrimination and becoming more active citizens Strategic work to secure changes to organisational policy and practice New strategic work and an advice service to improve media representations More focused work with BME communities – starting with African Caribbean audiences Continued social marketing campaign to change the attitudes and behaviour of 29 million adults towards people with mental health problems Community engagement work to bring people with and without mental health problems together

Previous campaigns 2009: Getting mental health discrimination on the agenda Creating a national space for discussion Providing information to address gaps in knowledge

Previous campaigns 2010: Introducing you to your prejudice Getting people to recognise their part in the problem

Current campaign : ‘It’s time to talk’

Innovation in anti-stigma work: social contact Evidence shows that knowing or having met someone who is open about having a mental health problem is one of the most powerful indicators that someone will have more favourable attitudes Making this happen… Grants fund for community projects that drive social contact Human Library events Roadshows 2011 – over 600 volunteers trained and supported to speak out Online social contact – blogs, stories and videos

Impact of Phase 1: reduction in discrimination The number of people living discrimination-free lives has increased by 4% Average levels of discrimination have dropped by 15% Behavioural change gains (ie a reduction in discrimination) have been sustained while public attitudes have proved to be more volatile Source: The Viewpoint survey 2010 (Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London). A survey of 979 people using mental health services in five Trusts in England.

Impact of Phase 1: 4% reduction in reported discrimination What this means is that since Time to Change started: Estimated 23,486 more people are living lives free from discrimination Estimated 71,540 fewer people have experienced discrimination when looking for work Estimated 75,153 fewer people have lost a job because of a mental health problem Estimated 66,911 more people have made a friend outside of the mental health sector

Impact of Phase 1: improvements to public attitudes There was a 2.2% improvement in public attitudes between 2008 – 2010 but this has dropped back in the last year. The drop is likely to be due to attitudes hardening during the recession, consistent with other international evidence Gains are higher amongst the target audience who are campaign aware.

94,000 + Facebook fans 21,000 + pledges 1,000 + Champions Celebrity supporters: Stephen Fry, Ruby Wax, Trisha Goddard, Marcus Trescothick, Alastair Campbell, Fiona Philips, Frank Bruno, Patsy Palmer… We have built a dynamic social movement of individuals and organisations “Being a Time to Change media volunteer has made me feel part of a bigger campaign, which is good medicine against the feelings of isolation that mental health problems sometimes lead to.”
