SPEEDING LAW VS. D.U.I

Class B misdemeanor Penalty of up to six months in jail Fine of $1,500 Class A misdemeanor Maximum penalty of up to one year in jail Fine of $2, THE LAWS AGAINST SPEEDING IN ILLINOIS Speeding 30 mph over the speed limitSpeeding 40 mph or more over the speed limit

WHEN DID THIS NEW LAW TAKE EFFECT? The new law took effect on January 1, 2011 If you have been ticketed for aggravated speeding, you may lose your driver’s license.

LAWS FOR A D.U.I IN ILLNOIS New Illinois law in 2011 causes revoked driver’s license for ticket IF death occurs.

If someone gets pulled over for drinking and driving they get their license suspended. During a suspension, the driver is prohibited from operating a motor vehicle for a definite time period. At the end of the time period, the driver is eligible for reinstatement by paying a reinstatement fee. There are no additional hurdles to reinstatement.

FIRST TIME OFFENSE FOR A D.U.I Class A Misdemeanor Up to $2,500 in fines Up to a year in prison

DRUNK DRIVING STATISTICS On average, someone is killed by a drunk driver every 40 minutes in US Each day 36 people die and almost 700 more are injured in vehicle crashes that involve a drunk driver The total cost of alcohol related crashes is roughly $51 billion In 2006, out of 1,746 fatality that included children one out of six was killed by an alcohol impaired driver Half of all teenage fatalities is due to drunk driving About 30 % of Americans are involved in an alcohol related crash sometimes in their lifetime In 2007 alcohol related fatalities were 15,387 which is 37% of all fatalities. Alcohol related fatalities are down by 27% as compared to Top 5 states with highest number of alcohol related fatalities are Texas, California, Florida, Pennsylvania and Illinois. About 81% of all drunk drivers are male drivers

TIME FOR A CHANGE… I think that the state should put tougher laws for D.U.I. When you are driving under the influence you have no control over your actions or the car. I am not saying that speeding 30 or 40 mph over the speed limit is right or even necessary, but you at least have control over the car and your actions. I don’t think being sent to prison for speeding is a solution. If tougher laws were thought of for drinking and driving maybe less people would do it and our communities would be somewhat safer. There should not be the same penalty for driving under the influence and speeding because they are two different things. I think in order for there to be a change in our community the law for D.U.I should not be the same as it is for speeding. The D.U.I law should be much tougher and harsher on individuals who drive under the influence.
