Literary Skills Romeo and Juliet

Figurative Language - 1. Oxymoron Definition- a figure of speech in which two opposite ideas are joined to create an effect. A combination of two contradictory or opposite words Example - Open secret Tragic comedy Seriously funny Awfully pretty Foolish wisdom Original copies Liquid gas

2. Paradox - something (such as a situation) that is made up of two opposite things and that seems impossible but is actually true or possible Paradox Vs. Oxymoron - Sentence or a group of sentences, as opposed to two words - Contradictory to a general truth but not an implied truth

Words with multiple meanings 3. Double Entendre - First meaning is usually straightforward, while the second meaning is ironic, risqué or inappropriate - Example : “Marriage is a fine institution, but I’m not ready for an institution” Explanation - The word “institution” in connection to marriage has two meanings in this context. One, it refers to marriage as an important practice of a society. Two, marriage is something that will cause an individual to go to a mental institution.

4. Euphemism Definition - the substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt. Examples – Passed away instead of died Correctional facility instead of jail

5. Extended Metaphor Definition – - An extended metaphor is when an author uses a metaphor, a comparison between two unlike subjects, throughout a long passage or even an entire poem. - An author would use extended metaphor to create a more clear comparison between the two items. - It also allows the audience to visualize an idea more clearly, and can make something that may be complex a little more simple. Example - In his play 'Romeo and Juliet', Shakespeare writes: 'But Soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Juliet is the sun! Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief'. Explanation In these lines, Romeo is comparing Juliet to the sun and he continues to do so through several lines. He even says the moon is jealous of her brightness.

Pun Definition - the humorous use of a word or phrase so as to emphasize or suggest its different meanings or applications, or the use of words that are alike or nearly alike in sound but different in meaning; a play on words. Example-
