Learning Objectives How do short term objectives help achieve strategy implementation? Identify the qualities of good short term objectives. How do functional tactics differ from corporate and business strategies? Why are short-term objectives needed when long term objectives are already available? What are policies? How do we use them to empower employees?

Unit 7 Implementation  How do short term objectives help achieve strategy implementation? Defined: measurable outcomes achievable in one year or less (Pearce & Robinson, 2011) Assist strategy implementation: Identify measurable outcomes Action plans Functional activities Create feedback to make corrections and evaluation of relevance and acceptability Provide for: Specificity Time for completion Accountability – Who is responsible?

 How do functional tactics differ from corporate and business strategies? Functional tactics defined: the key, routine activities that must be undertaken in each functional area to provide the business’s products and services (Pearce & Robinson, 2011) Translate thought into action Support business strategy Help accomplish business objectives Differ from business strategies:  Time horizon  Identify activities to be addressed / completed in the very short- term.  Specificity  Full understanding of what needs to be done to focus on desired outcomes.  Participants who develop them  Contribution toward corporate-level goals.  Why are short-term objectives needed when long term objectives are already available? Value-added Benefits Identify role of operating personnel Help resolve conflict between strategic intent and operational reality Basis for developing budgets, schedules, and other sources of strategic control Can be powerful motivators, especially when connected to reward systems

Unit 7 Implementation  What are policies? How do we use them to empower employees? Policy Defined: directives designed to guide the thinking, decisions, and actions of managers and their subordinates in implementing a firm’s strategy (Pearce & Robinson, 2011) Empowerment Defined: is the act of allowing an individual or team the right and flexibility to make decisions and initiate action (Pearce & Robinson, 2011) How can policies EMPOWER employees?

Unit 7 Implementation  What are policies? How do we use them to empower employees? Policies that empower employees: Establish indirect control over independent action Promote uniform handling of similar activities Ensure quicker decisions by standardizing answers to recurring questions Institutionalize basic aspects of organization behavior Reduce uncertainty in repetitive and day-to-day decision making Counteract resistance Offer predetermined answers to routine problems Afford managers a mechanism for avoiding hasty decisions

Unit 7 Assignment Assignment Checklist  Scotts Miracle-Gro Case Study in Doc Sharing  Conduct a SWOT analysis on the case study company’s internal and external challenges to create functional tactics (short-term objectives) to support its outsourcing proposition in moving product forward.  Create a case study analysis using the template provided in Doc Sharing.
