Defined: the formalized arrangement of interaction between and responsibility for the tasks, people, and resources in an organization (Pearce & Robinson, 2011) i.e. organizational chart 1)Simple - Owner-based, few employees, tasks, responsibilities, & communication  highly informal 2)Functional - Functional groups  tasks, people, & technologies 3)Divisional - Strategic business unit (SBU) 4)Matrix - Personnel  functional and staff, assigned to both basic function & project / product 5)Product-Team - Product or process teams with primary responsibilities i.e. R&D, engineering, sales and marketing, finance, & operations

6  Describe how outsourcing can create agile, virtual organizations. Agile organization defined: identifies a set of business capabilities central to high-profitability operations & builds virtual organizations around those capabilities (Pearce & Robinson, 2011) Virtual organization defined: temporary network of independent companies – suppliers, subcontractors – linked by info tech to share skills, access to markets, & costs (Pearce & Robinson, 2011) Outsourcing defined: obtaining work previous done by inside employees from sources outside the company (Pearce & Robinson, 2011)  Modular Organization  Self-contained companies contribute primary support activity.  Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)  Rapidly growing segment in services industry worldwide. 7  What is good organizational leadership? Qualities: Embrace change & gain commitment to implement strategy Clarify strategic intent of where they will lead the company and what results they expect to achieve Build the organization Education and leadership development of next level org leaders Perseverance – staying committed when others would give up Principles – fundamental personal standards, i.e. honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior

9 Unit 9 Final Project: Strategic Plan Assignment Checklist  Determine the elements of strategic control.  Evaluate the balanced scorecard approach and how it integrates strategic and operational control.  Determine what is meant by continuous improvement and how it contributes to incremental innovation.
