Mr shutler was my ninth grade History teacher; He was quit possibly the baddest teacher I ever had. He makes us write until our fingers aked. In addition we never were aloud to speak in his class. It was his job to speak and it was ours job to sit their and listen. Even the smarter and most good students had to sit there in total silent.

Introduction Paragraph Notes (7R) Avoid 1 st person (I think, In my opinion, we…) – State your opinions as though they were facts. – Your argument will sound much stronger. Make sure your goal of writing this essay is clearly stated. Do not begin any of your sentences with “well…” or “so…” or “um…” Your hook should be the first sentence of your introduction. Read over your essay to catch silly errors!!!!

Introduction Paragraph Notes (7R) The Introduction should also include a thesis statement. – What is the specific topic of your essay? – What is your essay going to be about? – What is your clear stance? – What are your three solid reasons to back up your claim?

(Page 8L) Introduction Outline 1 st sentence-Hook. 2 nd sentence- Introduce and/or define your topic. 3 rd sentence- Give some background information on the topic. 4 th sentence- clearly state the goal of writing this essay. (The goal in writing this letter is… or After reading this, President Obama should/will…) 5 th sentence- Thesis statement--Clearly state your stance and very briefly state your 3 reasons why you are correct in your stance (Topic + Stance + …because reason #1, reason #2, and reason #3). (Ex. Middle school students should wear uniforms because it reduces bullying, looks professional, and saves parents’ money.)

Research Time You have the rest of the period to research evidence to support your reasons. You may also work on your HOMEWORK  write a rough draft of your introduction paragraph on page

10 th Grade (Period 3) This is the start of the 10 th grade lesson plan… Agenda 1.Do Now (15-20 minutes) Have students correct the sentences for minutes. Go over the answers as a class. Show students the corrected sentences and ask for clarifications. 2.Outline/Pre-Writing (30 minutes) Go through the PowerPoint and have students fill in their answers as you go. 3.Informal Research Time (whatever time is left) Students can work on their Outline/Prewriting while consulting the internet. They should not be taking selfies or playing games.

Argumentative Essay Outline (4L) Copy the following outline in your notebook on page 4L. Skip a line in between each line. You will fill this in for homework. Argumentative Essay Pre-Writing (4R) You only need to write what is underlined (or answer the questions that are underlined). Fill in your information as it pertains to your stance and the topic that you selected. Step 1: Take a stance – Which side are you going to argue? – You must pick ONE side. – Neither side of this argument is right or wrong. It is entirely up to you which side you are on, and as long as you are persuasive, you will be right. Now take 2 minutes to decide which stance you are going to take. At the top of 4R, write “Step 1: Topic + Stance.” (Example: Middle school students should wear uniforms.) (I’m using uniforms as my example… you are writing about one of the topics from your prompt.)

Argumentative Essay Pre-Writing (4R) Step 2: Identify your audience – Who is my intended audience (prompt)? – Should my essay be formal or casual? – What am I going to need to say to convince my audience into thinking the way I am thinking? Now take 2-3 minutes to answer these questions under step 1.

Argumentative Essay Pre-Writing (4R) Step 3: What are some opinions and facts that will support my stance? – Here is your chance to show why you are correct in thinking that middle school students should or should not wear uniforms. – Remember that facts can be proven and opinions are judgments based on likes and dislikes. Now, under step 2, take 5 minutes to create a T chart listing 5 facts and 5 opinions that support your stance. (Next slide has an example of what to write…)

Argumentative Essay Pre-Writing (4R) Step 4: Choose your 3 strongest reasons. – These will become your 3 main arguments or reasons why you are correct in your stance. – You will need to back these reasons with evidence (facts, statistics, expert quotations, examples, proof). – These will also become your 3 body paragraphs in your letter. Now, take 2 minutes to circle your 3 main arguments as Step 4. You should brainstorm ways to prove these reasons with evidence.

Argumentative Essay Pre-Writing (4R) Step 5: Anticipate the counterargument. – You want to be ready for what the audience might say in response to your reasons. – What might your audience say after hearing your arguments? (Counterclaim) – How would you respond to that? (counterargument) Now, take 3 minutes to answer the two underlined questions above as Step 5 of these notes.

Congratulations… You have just mapped out your entire essay and now writing it is going to be 10 times easier!!!!!!

Fill in your outline on page 4L Step 1: Write out your essay topic at the top of the page. Step 2: Fill in your stance – “Middle school students should/should not wear uniforms.” Step 3: Choose three reasons that support your stance and fill them in under the outline for II., III., and IV (Body #1, 2, and 3). Step 4: Choose one reason from the other side and write it next to V. Counterargument on your outline. You are going to prove this reason wrong, so choose one that you can easily disprove. Step 5: Write your thesis statement using the following format: – “Middle school students should/should not wear uniforms because reason #1, reason #2, and reason #3. – Topic- Stance- reason 1, reason 2, and reason 3.

Research Time You have the rest of the period to research and find evidence to back up your reasons from your outline. Homework  Complete pages 4L and 4R by Wednesday.
