What are two types of video captions?

Hardcode or Hardcoded vs. Closed Captions

Captions Hardcoded Captions Captions are always visible and cannot be turned ON or OFF Foreign movies, especially those in theater, use hardcoded captions (subtitle) Closed Captions Captions sometimes must be turned on by the individual But users have the option to turn the captions ON or OFF Most prefer CC because some people don’t like reading captions while watching TV/Movies

What is the Automatic Captions? Automatically render captions for uploaded video on your personal account Captions are not 100% accurate You MUST edit these captions for accuracy Allow downloading of caption file for offline viewing Can save into multi-language caption files such as Spanish, French, Chinese…

Supported Languages Automatic captions are available in the following languages: English Dutch French German Italian Japanese Korean Portuguese Russian Spanish

Not Getting Any Auto Captions? If your video does not have automatic captions, it could be due to one or more of the following reasons: The language in the video is not yet supported by automatic captions The video is too long The video has poor sound quality or contains speech that YouTube doesn't recognize There is a long period of silence at the beginning of the video There are multiple speakers whose speech overlaps

What is SRT? SubRip Text (SRT) is the most used caption (subtitle) format Contains both the text and information about when each line of text should be displayed Easiest to work with when it comes to editing YouTube uses three formats when saving or uploading Closed Captions  SubRip Text (SRT)  Web Video Text Tracks (WebVTT)  SubViewer (SBV)
