SETUP PHONE (c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd5

Assembling Phone Battery Sdcard (required for fieldTask) SIM (optional) – Write on the back of the phone number The number from your user name Phone number Charging (usb – wall socket or laptop) (c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd6

PHONE SETUP

fieldTask Languages Supported Catalan German Spanish French Malay Italian Lithuanian Dutch Norwegian Portuguese Romanian Swahili Thai Vietnamese Chinese These are the languages available for menu commands and application messages. The language the survey is in are set in the survey template. If you want another language to be added to fieldTask you can provide the translations to Smap

Setting your phone language With Android you select one language to display and separately one or more languages for keyboard input – Keyboard language is changed by sliding finger on the space bar – Often good to always select English as one language, this may need to be used for entering user id and password Display Language Menu > Settings > Language & Keyboard > Select Language Keyboard Language(s) – Select “Android Keyboard”

Settings Getting information about your phone – “Menu” > “Settings” > “About Phone” – Exercise Get the IMEI of your phone (under status) What is your Android version? – You can also type *#06# on the keyboard to get the imei / device id. Use this approach to get the device id’s for your phone register (c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd10

NETWORK CONNECTIONS

Testing the connection Sometimes network connections can be blocked – For example you may have a wifi connection at a hotel but the hotel wants you to enter a password using your web browser Use your phone’s web browser to check that you can connect to the Internet – If a password is required enter it via the browser Goto www.google.comwww.google.com Do a search. Sometimes the web site will be shown because it is cached on the phone. Searching will verify that there is indeed a working network connection

Wi-Fi – Press home > Menu > Settings > Wireless and Networks > Wi-Fi Settings – Check the WiFi checkbox – If necessary: Select the network you want to connect to and enter password

GSM SIM Card 2.5G minimum, preferrably 3G Has data either pre or post-paid 10 MB of data is sufficient unless you are including images in your survey

Hotspot You will need at least one phone with a SIM card and access to data (not just voice) Then you can set this phone up as a hotspot and connect other phones to it. – Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Tethering & Portable hotspot > Portable Wi-Fi hotspot – Either check to enable without a password or set up a password in “Configure Wi-Fi hotspot” Good idea to use the USB cable to power the hotspot phone as it will drain the battery

Using a SIM card If GSM connection doesn’t work – APN (Usually the problem) find instructions from the provider or the internet Menu > settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks Often have to enter them manually – Make sure “Data Enabled” is checked In Uganda it is supposed to take several days to get a data connection I failed to get a data connection working in Ethiopia, you need to speak to someone at the call centre and they kept hanging up on me (c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd16

Setting up for a survey Display – Set to not auto-rotate – Set display timeout to 2 minutes Turn on GPS (If location is required) – Settings > location and security Set date / Time and TimeZone Place fieldTask app on home screen Remove other applications from home screen Charge Battery (c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd17

USING THE PHONE (c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd18

Text Questions Can be tricky on small screens You can speak the text but this requires a network connection Alternatively you can record an audio file – Audio files are much smaller than video (c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd19

Or get from Google Play Available in Google Play (Android’s App Store) You will need a google account (gmail addresss) – Don’t use your own unless its your own phone! (c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd24

The meaning of those permissions Storage: The surveys are stored on the sdcard while offline Network Comms: Can use the data network Phone Calls - Phone State and Identity: Gets the device id and sends it with the survey results so that the device can be uniquely identified. This permission also could allow the app to get the phone number of in progress calls. Your Location: So we can record GPS coordinates when requested. Not all surveys need this. Network Status: Can determine whether the network is on © Smap Consulting Pty Ltd25

Basic fieldTask Configuration Need to set the address of the server, the user and the password Start fieldTask Press “Menu” > “Settings” Enter the server as http://dev.smap.com.au Enter your user id and password (use “e1” for both) Optionally change the font size (only affects text inside the survey) Press “Back” (c) Smap Consulting Pty Ltd26
