Presentation transcript:

 Take out a sheet of paper and something to write with  Divide your paper into 3 sections  Write:  “My definition of public policy” in section 1  “Notes on public policy” in section 2  “My revised definition of public policy” in section 3

 On your sheet of paper in section 1, write what you think public policy is. Note: A policy that is public does not count!!! ;)

Public policies are contained in laws, rules, regulations, decisions, and practices created by  executive, legislative, and judicial branches  government bureaucracies  regulatory agencies  other public decision-making bodies 4

Public policy can be defined as the agreed upon ways that government fulfills its responsibilities to protect the rights of individuals and to promote the general welfare by solving problems. 5

 With your group, come up with a student- friendly definition of public policy and write it on your paper in section 3.

 On the back of your notes label 3 sections: No, Community Problems, and Yes

NOYES  Churches in the local community organize a drive to collect food and clothing and then distribute it.  City officials fund a program for needy individuals to “buy” food and clothing from participating merchants using vouchers.

 Come up with both examples and non- examples of public policy for the following scenarios: 1. School aged children are out on the streets late on school nights. 2. Parents are not using child protective car seats properly. 3. The lake in the community park is polluted and filled with litter.
