YHVH vs. The gods of Egypt! Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “ This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: “Let my people go…” (Exodus 5:1)

1st Plague: Water to Blood -------------------- Khnum = guardian of the Nile 2nd Plague: Frogs -------------------------------- Heqt = goddess of birth 3rd Plague: Gnats (Sand Flies) ----------------- Geb = great god of the earth 4th Plague: Swarms of Flies -------------------- Amon-Ra = creator and king of gods 5th Plague: Livestock Diseased ---------------- Hathor = goddess of the desert 6th Plague: Boils --------------------------------- Imhotep = god of medicine 7th Plague: Hail --------------------------------- Nut = goddess of the sky 8th Plague: Locusts ------------------------------ Nepri = god of grain 9th Plague: Darkness --------------------------- Ra = god of the sun 10th Plague: Death of the Firstborn son ------ ALL the gods of Egypt

1st Plague: Water to Blood (Exodus 7:14-25) Khnum “guardian of the Nile” It makes sense that the 1st plague was directed at the Nile River. It was Egypt’s lifeline and the center of their religious ideas. Osiris “god of the under world” The Egyptians believed the Nile was his bloodstream

2nd Plague: Frogs (Exodus 8:1-15) Heqt “goddess of birth” Heqt was believed to be the wife of the creator of the world and protector during child birth. The killing of a frog could have been punished by death. Consider the fact that the frogs were in Pharaoh’s bedroom and on his bed…the very place where babies are born. Where was Heqt?

3rd Plague: Gnats (Sand Flies) (Exodus 8:16-19) Geb “great god of the earth” The Hebrew word for gnat is commonly translated as “sand flies” and comes from a root word meaning “to dig”. This relates to insects that come from the earth’s soil. Egyptians made offerings to Geb for his care over the soil. This plague would have been an embarrassment to this god. Where was Geb?

4th Plague: Swarms of Flies (Exodus 8:20-32) Amon-Ra “creator and king of gods” Amon-Ra wore the head of a beetle. Ra should have been able to eliminate this plague because of his supposed power over all creation, specifically the sun. This is the first plague in which God made a distinction between his people and the Egyptians. The swarms stayed away from the land of Goshen where his people lived. Where was Amon- Ra?

5th Plague: Livestock Diseased (Exodus 9-1-7) Hathor “goddess of the desert” Hathor was the cow-headed goddess of the desert. She would have been the overseer of the herds that grazed within the desert Also the symbolic mother of Pharaoh

6th Plague: Boils (Exodus 9:8-12) Imhotep “god of medicine” Imhotep was a physician, architect, and chief advisor to the King. He was a real person that lived around 3150 BC and was awarded divine status after his death. Where was Imhotep?

7th Plague: Hail (Exodus 9:13-35) Nut “goddess of the sky” This plague originated from the sky and therefore challenged the “sky goddess” Where were they?

8th Plague: Locusts (Exodus 10:1-20) Nepri “god of grain” Locusts could destroy an entire villages food supply in a matter of minutes. Neither Nepri nor any other Egyptian god showed up to fight or protect against YHVH’s plague. Where was Nepri?

9th Plague: Darkness (Exodus 10:21-29) Ra “god of the sun” The son god Ra was worshiped as the greatest of the gods and labeled as the supreme diety. Where was he? Where were the moon gods?

1Oth Plague: Death of the Firstborn Son (Exodus 11:1 – 12:30) The death of the firstborn son was the most devastating of all the plagues. This plague was very selective and once again the LORD is making distinction between Egypt and His people. This plague was directed at… ALL the gods of Egypt. “Where were they?”
