Farming as a System Mr Boland Geography

Farming system- put these words into three groups labour Capital Harvesting seeds crop waste milk hides adding fertilizer fertilizers seeds grazing Milking animals Pesticides wheat Potatoes sowing barley wool Ploughing Eggs spraying

Farming system labour capital seeds animals fertilizers pesticides ploughing sowing spraying adding fertilizer harvesting grazing milking wheat potatoes barley seeds crop waste milk hides wool eggs profit

A system takes inputs and processes/ changes into a product/output.

Inputs Anything that enters the system is an input. Some are changed by processes while others are used to help the processes work.

Processes Processes change inputs to outputs. These are normally the jobs that are done.

Outputs Outputs are the things that leave the system

Farming system

labour capital seeds animals fertilizers pesticides ploughing sowing spraying adding fertilizer harvesting grazing milking wheat potatoes barley seeds crop waste milk hides wool eggs profit

Farming system

Changes in farming

Factors that can affect farms

Inputs Land Labour Machines Animals Capital Back up services Processes Ploughing Fertilisng Milking Cutting Sheep shearing Slurry spread Outputs Grain Grass Silage Potatoes Calves Milk Manure

Mixed Farming As we can see farming is an example of a system. A mixed farm is one that practices a number of different farming activities such as dairy, beef rearing and tillage. Most farms specialise in one main activity while another activity is carried out on a smaller scale.

What are the different types of farming? Arable Pastoral Commercial Subsistence Intensive Extensive

Changes in farming

Arable, pastoral or mixed?

Commercial or subsistence?

HOW DOES FARMING IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT Insect spray may be harmful. Fertilisers can run into streams and rivers. Runoff from silage, slurry and sometimes milk can also pollute rivers and streams

Write up a detailed account of a fishing system.
