Plan for the KEK beam test in November 2007 and Beyond Satoru Uozumi (Shinshu) Oct-1 Japan-Korea KNU

Objective of the KEK beam test is … Establish the extruded scintillator strips ! Performance of the extruded scintillator strips is extremely important issue for future of SCECAL. Need to prove that the extruded scintillators have enough performance for the 2008 FNAL beam test. Compare various extruded scintillator strips (light yield, response non-uniformity, strip-by-strip variation) with Kuraray strips.

Schedule of the beam-line commissioning So far : Magnet & beamline monitor cabling done. October 2 th ~ –KEKB beam will be turned on at Oct-2 –Check target position (1~2 days) –Magnet commissioning from upstream (from Oct-8, >10 days) –As soon as finishing the commissioning, user beam time will start : ~ Dec17 : beam for user (schedule may be flexibly changed) : –Nov 5~11 … Belle SVD group –Nov 12~18 … T2K –Nov 19~25 … ILC-CAL –Nov 26~Dec 2 … Phenix Since the overall schedule will be driven by the beam-line commissioning, KEKB operation and previous users, we have to prepare for flexible schedule change.

Beam test setup e-e- Trigger Counters Veto counter Movable stage SciFi tracker Strip scintillators Analog signal from trigger and veto counters will be useful to reject shower events. X-Y tracking by SciFi detector (by 1mm  scintillating fibers). Since there is only 1 tracker available, the tracker should be as close as possible to the strip scintillators. Movable stage is controlled by hand, and monitored by video. Strips will be mounted the frame used at the DESY BT. Target strips will be placed on 1 st layer, latter layers may be used for offline MIP selection.

Frames to support the strips spacer For 3 mm thick strip case, just follow DESY BT case (but not necessary to have 18 strips for a layer.) For 2 mm thick strip case, need a treatment to adjust MPPC position. One idea: Frame Spacer Spacers (0.5 mm) 2 mm strips Side view

Run Plan and DAQ time estimation Assume ~1000 events / mm 2 (is it enough?) 10 x 45 x 1000 = events per a strip 450k events / 100 Hz = 75 min per a strip Random trigger run ~ 5 min per an hour If we want to scan 5 strips per a type, it will take ~ 7 hours. Configuration change ~ 2 hours (?) 6 types = 54 hours, acceptable for 3 days of beam time if we take 24 hrs shift. Need to take data with MIP position scan and Random trigger (pedestal and MPPC gain by dark noise) With each type of scintillator.

Period / Man-power / etc Most likely schedule ( with +- 1 week of uncertainty ! ) : ~ Nov-11 th … Preparation of equipments ~ 15 th … All equipments arrive at KEK, start preparation at Fuji B4. 19 th ~21 th … Setup on the beam-line 22 th ~24 th... Data Taking 25 th … Withdraw from beamline ~ 28 th … Shipping back equipments from KEK Man-power –1+(2~3) for beamline device setup, –1+(1~3) for detector setup, –1+(1~3) for DAQ, trigger logic and electronics –2 person x 3 shifts, or 3 x 2 per a day ? –> 5 person from Japan, 3 person from KNU. Certificate of rad-worker certificate issued by YOUR INSTITUTE is necessary ! Don’t forget to bring it !

Another beam KEK? If the result of KEK beam test shows necessity of more improvement of extruded scintillator, we may have another beam test in Feb-Mar Application deadline is end of November, so we can judge just after the beam test.

The 2008 FNAL beam test Will be Likely happened in Jun-Aug 2008 ? Establish the Scintillator-strip ECAL –Evaluate all the necessary performances using various beams ( ,K,e,  ….) with wider energy range –Make the SCECAL ready for the engineering design Combined test with the Analog HCAL Test  0 -> 2  reconstruction Measure hadron shower to test simulation model –Compare the result with various models –Precise hadron simulation will help study of PFA

Gain monitoring system for the FNAL beam test Reflector & Black sheets Acrylic bar Clear fibres UV LED CMB CANbus control PC Distribute LED light pulse to all the strips and monitor the gain by watching 1 p.e. peak position Need an “window” on TiO 2 paint to inject photons for monitoring. How we can make it ?

Summary Establishing the extruded scintillator strip is extremely important issue for the SCECAL group. The KEK beam test will prove the improved performance of the extruded strips. Then we will proceed to the FNAL beam test with larger scale prototypes fully built by extruded strips !
