Beam Test Plans at the KEK Fuji Beam line (as of Nov-4 2007) S. Uozumi In this slide I will give my idea for somewhat detailed beam test plan. Let’s discuss and finalize the plan !

People D. H. Kim (KNU) Nov14~22? J. S. Suh (KNU) ?~? D. Kong (KNU) ?~? K. Kawagoe (Kobe) Nov 17~19, 23~25 D. Jeans (kobe) Nov15~end T. Kaneko (Kobe) Nov15~end H. Ikeda (Kobe) Nov15~end K. Ueyama (Kobe) Nov15~end T. Takeshita (shinshu) Nov19~? S. Uozumi (shinshu) start~end M. Nishiyama (Shinshu) start~end Y. Sudo (Tsukuba) start~end T. Ikuno (Tsukuba) start~end H. Yamazaki (Tsukuba) ? ~ end Y. Takahashi (Tsukuba) start~end “start” means Nov-12 on Monday. “end” means the date where everything is done (includes possible delays). Let me know if there are modifications needed on the participating period.

Overall schedule ~Nov-12 th : Gather equipments at KEK Nov 12 th ~24 th : Start preparation of DAQ, SCT and SciFi system at Fuji B4 by people who can participate. Nov 16 th : Almost participants are at KEK, take radiation training and have kick-off meeting. Nov 17 th,18 th (weekend) : Prepare everything as much as possible Nov 19 th ~20 th : Beamtime starts, setup on beamline Nov 21 th ~ 24 th : As soon as the setup finished, start comissioning run followed by strip scan and run as long as possible Nov 25 th (could be extended) : Withdraw from beamline

Experimental setup

Strips to be tested - Let’s start with newer stuff, since beam time and rate are limited - 1.Extruded 3 mm thick direct readout without TiO 2 2.Extruded 3 mm thick fiber EMBEDDED readout with TiO 2 3.Extruded 3 mm thick fiber EMBEDDED readout without TiO 2 4. Extruded 3 mm thick fiber readout with TiO2 5. Extruded 3 mm thick direct readout with TiO2 6. Extruded 3 mm thick fiber readout without TiO2 7.Kuraray strip 3 mm thick fiber readout 8.Kuraray strip 3 mm thick direct readout 9.Kuraray strip 2 mm thick direct readout Old ones Newly produced Kuraray as Reference Will start with (1~3)+7 with ~3 different strips, and if time permits test 9, 8 and 4, and if time permits we will test 9, 8 and 4~5. Use the same MPPCs if possible, for direct comparison. Detailed plan will be finalized at kick-off and on-shift meeting.

Run Plan and DAQ Time Estimation (assuming only SciFi is available.) Assume ~1000 events / mm 2 (is it enough?) 10 x 45 x 1000 = 450000 events per a strip 450k events / 10 Hz = 750 min per a strip Random trigger run ~ 5 min, taken once per an hour 12~13 hours to scan one strip. Configuration change ~ 2 hours (?) If the SCT is available for trigger and tracking, DAQ time will be improved and multiple layers can be scanned at once. Need to take data with MIP position scan and Random trigger (pedestal and MPPC gain by dark noise) With each type of scintillator.

Startup jobs DAQ system and Electronics (1 staff+1 student) –CAMAC+NIM+VME(for SCT) + temperature monitoring system Beamline devices (1+3) –Manage trigger, veto, SciFi, SCT hardware –Installation, cabling, alignment, HV, threshold, making trigger logic. Detector (1+1~2) –Assemble scintillator-strip module, alignment, connection, cabling. –Install temprature monitoring sensors at the same time. Analysis codes (1+0~1) –Discuss data format with DAQ team –Prepare macro for “on-the-fly” analysis

Shift plan 3 shifts per a day (0~8, 8~16, 16~24), 2~3 persons (at least 1 staff + students) in one shift. Official language is English during the beam test ! To share all the information, DO NOT use Japanese as possible as you can ! Contact me anytime (Satoru : 080-3500-8846) if you have any trouble during your shift.

Data Monitoring & Analysis We will perform “on-the-fly” analysis during data taking. Need always to watch gain (by pedestal run), light yield, and position dependence for all the strips on beamline. Better to plot the temperature, too. The analysis will run on DAQ machine (since the beam rate is not high, we don’t need to care about dead time from analysis jobs).

Scintillator-strip assembly spacer As done at the DESY BT, strips will be mounted in acrylic frame, and the scintillator layers will be installed in the detector frame and light shielded. Flat cables will be connected to CAMAC ADC after signal amplification by ATLAS ASD. Frame

Scintillator-strip assembly

Equipments needed CAMAC crate & module (ADC, coinc. reg.) NIM crate & module VME crate & module DAQ PC with CAMAC & VME interfaces Bias voltage source Movable stage and controller SciFi tracker, cables Trigger counter ATLAS SCT ATLAS ASD and Cables Temperature monitoring system Drivers, testers, cutters, black-sheets, tapes, etc…

Stuffs to borrow from Kobe

Stuffs to borrow from Shinshu

Stuffs to borrow from Tsukuba

Shipping of the equipments (from Shinshu and Kobe to KEK) Please ship equipments to Miyamoto-san at KEK with sign of “GLDCAL beamtest equipments”. Make sure stuffs will arrive on time (by Nov-12 Monday). Bringing with you will be another option. 〒 305-0801 茨城県つくば市大穂 1-1 高エネルギー加速器研究機構 素粒子原子核研究所 宮本 彰也 教授

Radiation training / accommodation Bring certificate of rad-worker from your institute! In addition to the rad training, beamline lecture will be needed. It will be held for us on Oct-16 (Fri). For accommodation, I will negotiate to KEK users office on Nov-6. For more information, I will keep you updating via e-mail. Contact me if you have any questions.

Is there anything still missing?
