Causes of the Civil War

Should Territories be free or slave? The North: Worried that making new territories into slave territories would give South too much power The South: Argued that slaves were property and government couldn’t forbid people from owning them

Compromise of 1850 North and South couldn’t agree so they made a Compromise Fugitive Slave Act: northerners were required to return any escaped slaves they found in the North Popular Sovereignty: New territories could decide whether they were free or slave territory California was added as a free state.

Northerners become angry because of Dred Scott Decision Dred Scott was a slave who had lived in the North. He then moved to the South. After his owner died, he filed a lawsuit that said he should be considered free because he had lived in free territory for so long. Dred Scott Decision: Supreme Court ruled that Dred Scott stay a slave and that it was unconstitutional to forbid territories from having slaves. Slavery could now expand

Election of 1860 Southerners felt that if Abraham Lincoln was elected, he would end slavery. After Lincoln was elected President, Southern states started to secede.

Assignment: Create a word wall story Write a 1-2 paragraph story that explains what caused the Civil War. In your story, you must use the following words: popular sovereignty, John Brown, Dred Scott decision, Election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln, and secession.

Southerners Become Angry because of Lincoln Abraham Lincoln believed slavery would spread unless there were laws that stopped it. Lincoln was elected President. South felt they lost their state rights and their voice in federal government. Southern states start seceding from the Union- (United States) because they thought this was the only way they were going to save slavery. Southern states formed their own country called the Confederacy (Confederate States of America) with Jefferson Davis as president.
