People on LEFT side usually Do NOT take responsibility for maintaining good health. People on RIGHT side usually exhibit a high degree of responsibility, discipline and positive direction in their life. LEFT SIDE: TREATMENT PEOPLE RIGHT SIDE: PREVENTION PEOPLE

Seven Lifestyle Factors that make a difference in people’s overall health: Get between 7-8 hours sleep per night. Eat nutritious foods from the 5 major food groups. Refrain from smoking and using tobacco products. Eat breakfast daily. Do minutes of non-stop vigorous activity a minimum of 3 X a week. Do NOT use alcohol or other drugs. Maintain your recommended body weight.

CAUSES OF DEATH COMPARISON In 1900, the leading causes of death were PNEUMONIA/FLU – TUBERCULOSIS – INFLAMMATIONS OF THE DIGESTIVE TRACT. In 2005, the leading causes of death are HEART DISEASE – CANCER – STROKE.

Health Literate An individual’s ability to read and understand basic health information. A person must be: –A critical thinker and problem solver –A responsible, productive citizen –A self-directed learner –An effective communicator

Influences on Your Health Your health is affected by a number of factors over which you have NO control. –Heredity- all the traits and properties handed down to you from your parents –Environment- the sum total of your surroundings---Your family, where you grew up, where you live or have lived and all of your experiences in life.

ABSTINENCE RESPONSIBLE TEENS, WHO VALUE THEIR HEALTH, ABSTAIN (AVOIDING HARMFUL BEHAVIORS) FROM NUMEROUS HIGH-RISK BEHAVIORS. ABSTINENCE FROM HIGH-RISK BEHAVIORS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT HEALTH BEHAVIORS YOU CAN MAKE AS A TEEN.
