Background $300 million appropriated nationwide for appliance rebates as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Maryland received $5.4 million for consumer rebates Each state chose appliances to rebate Rebate dollars for each utility have been allocated based on energy use (MWh)

Qualifying Appliances Super-efficient clothes washers listed as CEE Tier 2 or Tier 3 (Modified Energy Factor (MEF) greater than 2.0 and Water Factor (WF) less than 6.0) - $100 Referenced on ENERGY STAR Qualified Clothes Washers with columns titled “Modified Energy Factor (MEF)” and “Water Factor” Super-efficient refrigerators listed as CEE Tier 2 or Tier 3 (At least 25% more efficient than federal standard) - $50 Referenced on ENERGY STAR Qualified Refrigerators & Freezers as column titled “Percent Better” ENERGY STAR electric heat pump water heater - $300

Program Objectives Save energy by encouraging appliance replacement through consumer rebates Make rebates available to consumers Enhance existing rebate programs by leveraging local program infrastructure

Utility Programs Each of Maryland’s 5 largest electric utilities offer rebates on various ENERGY STAR appliances Not all existing utility programs denote specific efficiency levels to qualify for rebate Federal funding will be in addition to existing utility rebates for certain models of ENERGY STAR clothes washers and refrigerators Goal is to move the market toward super-efficient appliances

Timing The mail-in rebates will apply to eligible appliances purchased on or after April 22 nd April 22 is a soft launch date – rebate applications, links to ENERGY STAR website or lists of qualifying appliances, and program information will only be available online for the first few weeks Utilities will work directly with their retailer partners to distribute in-store information and materials and train retail sales associates

Field Implementation Each utility markets the program in their service territory Initially, applications and program information will be available online In mid-May, applications, in-store point-of-purchase materials, and store-level sales associate training will be implemented Information on MEA website

Rebate Process For consumers whose utility has an existing appliance rebate program, they will apply directly to their utility (customers of Allegheny, BGE, Delmarva, Pepco, and SMECO) If not a customer of these utilities, consumer will apply for the rebate through MEA For all Maryland consumers: Application forms available on websites Consumer mails in the form and required documentation Check comes in the mail in about 8 weeks

How to qualify Rebates are available for qualified appliances installed in Maryland residences Appliances must be purchased at Maryland retailers or online Consumers must certify that they are replacing an old appliance of the same functionality (no additional haul-away requirements)

The rebate program is NOT retroactive. It will only apply to purchases made on or after April 22, 2010 Mail-in rebates are available to customers on a first- come, first-served basis. Rebates are not guaranteed. Utilities will post a notice on their websites when 75% of all rebate funds have been expended One appliance rebate per residential consumer, per product How to qualify
