Dr Jeremy Leach Principal Policy Advisor Wealden District Council Paws on Watch

What is the Paws on Watch project all about? What qualifies anyone to join Paws on Watch? What roles do members perform? How do people join?

Paws on Watch Approximately 20,000 dogs in Wealden. It’s like a mobile Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

This is our logo

To become a ‘Paws on Watch’ member… 1.You live in the Wealden area or walk your dog in the Wealden area. 2.You are a responsible dog owner who always clears up after your dog in public areas. 3.You are interested in helping to keep your area safer. 4.You are willing to supply your name and contact details including post code and address.

Paws on Watch members have three roles Firstly – To act as an extra pair of eyes and ears in the local community, reporting back anything that seems suspicious or unusual.

Paws on Watch members have three roles Secondly - to promote responsible dog ownership amongst other dog walkers by challenging those that do not clear-up after their dog and offering them a bag (if you feel it is appropriate and safe to do so).

Paws on Watch members have three roles Thirdly – Being tasked by Sussex Police or other enforcement agencies to keep an eye open for specific crimes in their area and report any details back. For example if there was a spate of heating oil thefts in a particular area or a regular fly-tipper in an area then ‘Paws on Watch’ members in that area would be ed and asked to look out for certain evidence such as vehicles and the like.
