Antiseptics and Disinfectants Definition : Antiseptics are the chemical sterilizing substances which are used to kill pathogenic microbes or for prevention of their growth They are directly applied to tissues, to broken skin after burns and wounds Disinfectants are the substances which are used for destruct the bacteria and their spores and are not directly applied to tissues due to their toxicity

Synonym : Sumatra Benzoin, Gum Benzoin Biological source: It is a balsamic resin obtained from Styrax benzoin (Sumatra benzoin ) Styrax tonkinesis (Siam benzoin) and other species of Styrax Family : Styraceae Geographical source : South eastern Asia, Thailand and Vietnam Benzoin

Description Sumatra Benzoin: Colour : It is greyish - brown or grey Odour : Aromatic and characteristic Taste : Sweetish and slightly acrid Benzoin Fig.49.1 Benzoin

Description Siam Benzoin : Colour : Yellowish brown to rusty brown Odour : Agreeable and Vanilla like Taste : Sweetish and slightly acrid Benzoin Fig.49.2 Benzoin

Benzoin Standards : Benzoic acid content :Not less than 60% (Sumatra) Not less than 12% (Siam) Alcohol soluble matter:Not less than 70% (Sumatra) Not less than 90% (Siam) Acid in soluble ash :Not less than 10%

Benzoin Chemical constituents : Sumatra benzoin contains free balsamic acids and esters derived from them Triterpenoid acids such as sumaresinolic and Siaresinolic acids are also present The major constituent of Siam benzoin is an ester of Coniferyl benzoate

Benzoin Identification tests : Alcoholic solution of Benzoin with water gives milky white solution Benzoin + Ether Extract + H 2 SO 4 Brown colour (Sumatra Benzoin) Deep purplish red (Siam) Benzoin + 4 ml KMno 4 Odour of Benzaldehyde

Uses : Irritating Expectorant, Carminative, Diuretic Externally used as Antiseptic and Protective Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract infections Benzoin
