Annotated Bibliography September 9, 2014

What is a bibliography? A list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, etc.) you have used for researching your topic Includes: Author, Title, Publisher, etc. Also called: “References” “Works Cited”

What is an annotation? A summary and/or evaluation THIS MEANS: Your annotated bibliography include both citations and a summary of each source!

Why is it important? To learn about your topic This is a better way to collect and analyze the information you have for your topic, and to determine if your topic needs to be broader or narrower.

Format Citation in MLA Format Annotation (summary) Summary Evaluation of the text How it is relevant to your research

MLA Format

General Format Double-space, Times New Roman, 12 pt font Leave only one space after punctuation marks 1” margins on all sides Header that includes last name and page numbers in the upper right-hand corner

First Page Upper left-hand corner: Name Instructor’s name Course Date Title: DO NOT underline, italicize, or place in quotation marks. Standard capitalization, centered

In-Text Citations The information included depends on the type of source Any information provided in-text MUST match up with your Works Cited page

Author-Page Style Includes author’s last name and page number Example: “All my life I’d told myself studying and reading and writing and working like mad was what I wanted to do, and it actually seemed to be true, I did everything well enough and got all A’s, and by the time I made it to college nobody could stop me” (Plath 31). If the author is mentioned in the sentence, only page number needs to be included in the citation

No Known Author If no author is known for a work, use a shortened title of the work in place of the author name. If it’s a short work (article, poem, etc.), put in quotation marks If it’s a longer work (play, book, etc.), italicize Still use a page number

Authors With the Same Last Name If two or more authors have the same last name, provide the first initial for each author in the citation. Example: (A. Miller 46) (R. Miller 12) If they have the same first initial, write their full name

Multiple Works by the Same Author Include a shortened title for the work. Examples: This is evident when she writes “That was a long supper. I set there the whole time watching her watch him and Julie watching them and it was just a mess, I’m telling you. I was wore to a frazzle when we left” (Adams, My Old 76). We take a look at the “Scots-Irish—fiercly independent, hard-working, hard-drinking, quick to anger and to fight folks” (Adams, Come Go Home 21).

Internet Sources Include the first item that appears on your Works Cited page Author name, article name, website name, etc.) You do not need to put paragraph or page numbers, or the URL

Block Quotations A quote from a source that is more than four lines Do not include quotation marks Indent the block quotation

Works Cited Page Begin on a separate page at the end of your research paper. It should have the same headings and format as the rest of your paper.
