IDENTIFICATION All goods have been given particular titles and numbers for use in transport. These names and numbers play a vital role in ensuring that other people involved in the transport chain can easily work out their duties and responsibilities. We have the following :- Proper Shipping Names (PSN) UN Numbers

PACKAGING Dangerous goods are safe in the transport system as long as they are contained in a suitable device. This may be a package, intermediate bulk container IBC, large packaging, or tank. The transport rules demand that UN authorised packages are used for the carriage of most dangerous substances. These packs are identified by the UN packaging mark as shown on the containers opposite.

MARKS AND LABELLING Packages, IBCs, large packagings, freight containers, tanks and vehicles caring dangerous goods must carry warnings to indicate their potential dangers. References are made to marks, labels, signs and placards, but the end result is usually a set of warnings made up words and symbols from a common database. The database is the UM Model Regulations in ADR Vol 2

DOCUMENTATION Invoice Document - consignor, consignee ( address ), UN number and designation Emergency information for the Driver Emergency Action code if required Prescribed Temperature if required

EMERGENCY INFORMATION FOR THE DRIVER Specifies all information required in the case of an accident If travelling in Europe must be in language of Destination as well as English, French or German

TRAINING The UN recommendations include a wide range of training requirements that involves everybody who plays a part in consigning and transporting dangerous goods. This includes staff who classify, identify, package, mark / label, document, load and move goods. Certificate requirements for Drivers ( over certain thresholds) and DGSAs.

SECURITY Since 9/11 and 7/7, Security is an important target for all regulations related to the carriage of dangerous goods. All Staff from consignor to consignee have security duties.

WHAT YOU SHOULD ENSURE ! When planning to transport Dangerous Goods please use competent Companies, who have trained DGSAs and have ADR Drivers or who can direct you to the correct Companies. Always request a copy of their qualifications Some goods due to limited quantities or exemptions under ADR may not come under ADR – but you must check ! The legislations is implemented by the Department of Transport (DFT) and enforced by the Police / VOSA & DFT
