History of Evolution Five evolutionary stages can be identified and analyzed to appreciate the gradual emergence of dentistry as profession. Stage I Undifferentiated occupation # In this stage diseases of the teeth were abandoned to their own courses, folk medicine was used in the treatment of tooth ache and infections. # Few individuals devoted their time for the treatment but none depended solely on dentistry.

Stage II Differentiated occupation # Indigenous practitioners emerged in this stage, without any formal training, they devoted their entire time for the practice of dentistry, # Skills were acquired under apprenticeship, fabrication of dental prosthesis was done. There was no restriction for the practice of dentistry by the respective governments.

Stage III Initial professionalization # Dentists formed a guild / association, organized the course of formal training for a period of 6 months to 2 years. # It is in this stage profession came into existence, restrictive legislation was formed in the interest of people.

Stage IV Intermediate professionalization # Independent Dental schools were established with increased course duration with minimum requirement for admission being secondary education. # Courses of training and regulation were established for auxiliaries. # Professional associations became stronger due to increase in dental professionals.

Stage V Advanced professionalization # Dentistry became recognized as a health profession with an increasing emphasis on biological sciences and research. # Dentistry became strongly organized and institutionalized. # Post graduate education developed into number of dental specialties and dental practice by unqualified personnel tamed.
