The Airport Project Exploring future innovative airport concepts Hugo de Jonge (NLR) Amsterdam March 5 th 2012

5 March 2012The 2050 Airport Project - Workshop2 Overview Project “2050AP”:  Summary of project characteristics  Project scope and objectives  Project approach and planning  Present status

5 March 2012The 2050 Airport Project - Workshop3 Project summary The Airport project: –FP7 project, a small/medium scale focused research project –Addressing step changes in air transport operations –Subject: Airports Duration: 30 months –From September 2011 until March 2014 Budget: 2M euro EU-Commission: DG-Research Project objective: –This project will explore new airport concepts with radical and novel solutions to prepare airports for 2050 and beyond.

5 March 2012The 2050 Airport Project - Workshop5 Objectives reached by stakeholders involvement Participating airports (by sub-contracting):  Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the Netherlands  Fraport, Frankfurt, Germany  Kaunas Airport, Lithunian  Transilvania Airport, Tårgu-Mures, Romania

5 March 2012The 2050 Airport Project - Workshop6 Project Scope and objectives The Airport Project (2050AP): 3 Innovative airport concepts: –The time-efficient airport –The climate neutral airport –The low-cost airport Focus: –Aircraft –ground interface to facilitate new aircraft configurations –Airport lay-out environment distances and space occupancy aspects –Intermodal connections aircraft to aircraft, train, bus, cars

5 March 2012The 2050 Airport Project - Workshop7 The Time-Efficient Airport Time-Efficient airport concept: Objective to maximise value through efficient and effective air transport operations. Seamless flow through air transport system The airport is the pivotal part, where passenger, baggage, cargo and aircraft come together. The passenger to depart and arrive from/to his or her point of origin without disruption. The total journey time significantly shortened.

5 March 2012The 2050 Airport Project - Workshop8 The Ultra-Green Airport Ultra-Green airport concept: Objective to make airport self sufficient regarding its energy needs. Airport to operate in a climate neutral way. Airport to limit noise exposure to municipalities surrounding the airport. Airport facilitates aircraft- ground-passenger interface directly coupled to a multi-modal infrastructure.

5 March 2012The 2050 Airport Project - Workshop9 The Cost-Effective Airport Cost-effective airport concept: Objective to create airport with extremely low operating costs. Investment of building a complete airport should be cost-efficient in order to minimise depreciation. Non-performance costs are minimised due to a perfect and robust execution of the schedule.

5 March 2012The 2050 Airport Project - Workshop10 Achievements of Interest Far-future Airport concepts, 2050:  3 concepts:  Not necessarily excessive in expansion and eye-catchers, but focus on being competitive, environmental friendly, safe, and service- attractive  4 Airports of direct interest:  2 hub airports, i.e. Frankfurt, Schiphol  2 small to medium-size airports, i.e. Kaunas and Tårgu-Mures  The needs of Europe (Eurocontrol’s PRR-2010):  12 hub airports and highly congested large airports  30 major and possibly expanding airports in Europe  130 small to medium-size airports with commercial interest  Our objective to provide benefits to:  New airports, and  Existing and expanding airports Our challenge to evaluate what is the “real” interest for Europe
