Ordnance survey maps What information does maps give us????? Maps tell us 2 basic things: 1. Physical landscape 2. Human landscape 1 Physical landscape= relief + drainage Relief: what is this? It is the shape of the land and refers to mountains Drainage: this has to do with water. It includes rivers, lakes, canals 2. Human Landscape= settlement + land use + communication Settlement=where people live Land use=golf course, caravan park, forest Communication=roads, airports, ports, railways and canals

How do we find locations on a map? If you look at page 138 fig 7.8: you can see Ireland is divided into 25 squares each with its own letter name This is called the NATIONAL GRID A grid reference also contains numbers on the bottom of the map and up the side of the map The numbers on the bottom of the map look like this: I I I I I I THEY MOVE TOWARD THE EAST they are called EASTINGS WE ALWAYS READ THEM FIRST!

NORTHINGS THE LINES AT THE SIDE LOOK LIKE THIS: 58 ____________ they are called NORTHINGS 57____________ 56____________ NOW WE ARE GOING TO USE BOTH THE EASTINGS AND THE NORTHINGS TO FIND A PLACE ON THE MAP THIS IS CALLED USING A 4 FIGURE GRID REFERENCE

4 Figure Grid References Click here to find out more

A four figure grid reference points you towards a particular square on a map. On all OS maps these squares represent one square kilometre. All maps will have lines numbered around the edge. These will not always start at zero but will increase both upwards and across the map. (See the example below). A four figure grid reference will point you to the bottom left hand corner of that particular grid square. Follow the red NEXT buttons to see how these work then try the examples given.

Let’s find grid square 21 31

You are now at the bottom left hand corner of grid square 21 31

What grid square is the letter T in? See how the grid line numbers are now shown on the map Click here to see if you’re right

T is in grid square Along to line 04 Up to line 82 Now we are at the bottom left of square 04 82

Now try your hand at these….. 1. What square is the Caravan Park on the map on the following page? Click here for mapmap

Decide what you think the grid square is then click on the red button to check your answer

Caravan Park is in grid square

Did you get all those right? Yes click here to return to main menu and choose another skill No click here to return to read again about 4 figure grid references.

Lets look at page 146 Yesterday we looked at the 2 basic pieces of information that maps give us Under the following headings find an example of each on the map on page 146 GIVE A GRID REFERENCE FOR EACH ANSWER 1. physical landscape: = relief + drainage Find an example of a mountain Find an example of a river or lake or canal 2. Human landscape = settlement + land use + communication Find an example of settlement Find an example of land use….golf course? Caravan park? Forest? Find an example of communication…roads, airports, ports

How do we show height on maps? There are a few ways to do this 1. By colours which range from green (flat areas up to 200 metres) up to brown for areas over 200 metres 2. Contour lines: these lines join up areas that are equal in height 3. Spot height: this is a small black dot with the height written beside it 4. Triangulation stations: these are triangles with the exact height written beside them Now look at page 146 and see which of these you can find

Drawing a sketch map 1. draw a frame that is the same shape as the one given 2. give the sketch a title and show where the North is using NORTH

PAGE 144 DRAW A SKETCH MAP AND INSERT: 1. N62 2. RIVER SUIR 3. RACECOURSE 4. RAILWAY STATION 5. A WOODLAND AREA….(A FOREST) 6. A CASTLE
