20 What does relief mean?

21 Answer: Relief Relief tells us the shape and the height of a hill or
slope Name the three ways that a map can show us this….

22 Contour lines There are brown lines that form circle-like shapes on a map. These tell us how steep a hill is. If we only look at part of the line, we can read how steep the slope is

23 Contour lines A steep slope looks like this
A gentle slope looks like this Contour lines Lots of mountains! Like in Scotland Very flat land! Like in Cambridge

24 Spot heights Spot heights These are the numbers which show the exact
height of a given point. The triangle is the highest point of the hill 330 260 210 180 130 70 20

25 Layer colouring Green = less than 100m Yellow = 100-200m
Orange = m Brown = 300m+

26 Split your page into positive things about where a settlement should be located and negative things about where a settlement located…. Steep relief (slopes) Near a main road Far away from other towns Near a river Near a farm Fall away from a forest Fall from a main road Fall from a river Near a National Trust house Close to another town Near forest

27 Imagine that you are planning to build a housing estate explain the positive and negative reasons….

28 Look at an OS Map: Where would you build your housing estate?
For this you must give a 6 figured grid reference and explain why you would build your housing estate there 2) Where wouldn’t you build your housing estate? For this you must give a 6 figured grid reference and explain why you would not build your housing estate there
