Through Philip Mazzei, the family claims a very strong and special link to the history of the United States

Borne and brought up in the liberal Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Philip moved to Virginia in 1773, spurred by his curiosity to explore the New World There he strengthened his friendship with Jefferson, Washington, Franklin and Adams, with whom he shared his modern, progressive ideals He was the first to introduce in the colony vines from Tuscany and other regions of Europe The vines were planted on Thomas Jefferson’s property at Monticello

He advocated the notion that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It inspired Thomas Jefferson’s cornerstone in the Declaration of Independence.

His thoughts were endorsed by J.F.K in his “A Nation of Immigrants”: “The great doctrine ‘All men are created equal’, incorporated into the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson, was paraphrased from the writings of Philip Mazzei, an Italian-born patriot, and close friend of Jefferson’s”.

In recognition of Philip’s role as an American Patriot, a stamp in his name was issued in 1980 (250 years after his birth) as a “Patriot Remembered”

To remember Philip Mazzei’s legacy as:  a visionary liberal thinker  personal friend of Thomas Jefferson’s  American Patriot  contributor to the Declaration of Independence  innovative grape grower, at Monticello For “2013 – Year of Italian culture in America ”, the Mazzei family will celebrate their ancestor’s memory by:  replanting a “Mazzei” vineyard at Monticello  perpetuate it with vines selected by the Mazzei’s  support and sponsor the Thomas Jefferson Foundation  and … introducing a brand new wine…
