Also append the letter from your dean indicating the submission of your prior sabbatical report. Part II: Project Proposal Includes: Description of your Project(s) New: 1250-word maximum. Part III: Submitting the Application New: Notarized Certification Page (re: Promissory Note, if applicable, or Description of Attachable Assets) now occurs only after sabbatical is approved. Created by Suzanne Scott

Form 320: Sabbatical Leave Application Changes If you have had a sabbatical before: – a copy of the most recent sabbatical report is due, and – the letter of response acknowledging receipt of your sabbatical report (this was always required) Note 1250-word limit to the description of the sabbatical. Benefits to the CSU no longer includes “maintaining currency in one’s field.” Created by Suzanne Scott

Fo rm 320: Sabbatical Leave Application Changes (continued) Supporting materials are listed, such as: contracts, letters of support, publisher’s correspondence “Evaluation of Proposals” section highlights the primary and significant factors in evaluation. Notarized Certification Page or Promissory Note now occurs after sabbatical is approved. Created by Suzanne Scott

Evaluation Criteria Description of the project(s), understandable by educated layperson. We’re looking for: – Thoroughness – Specificity – Clarity of proposal – Brevity (1250-word maximum) Benefit to the CSU – This is primary Likelihood of achieving goals – This is significant Created by Suzanne Scott

Benefits to the CSU May include: – Research – Scholarship and creative activity – Instructional improvement – Faculty retraining Created by Suzanne Scott

Likelihood of Achieving Goals E.g.: – Providing a timeline of proposed steps – Documentation of your past (relevant) scholarship (e.g., short CV—up to 2 pages) – Letters of support (e.g., from co-authors) (a maximum of 4) Do not submit manuscripts, art work, etc. Created by Suzanne Scott

The Rating of Applications Chair (dept. impact) PLCDean ChairApplicant and Provost PLC and Dean rate separately PLC and Dean send their recommendations to the applicant and to the Provost simultaneously Created by Suzanne Scott

Process, cont’d The Dean and Chair receive a copy of the PLC recommendation (Senate Resolution #18-13/14, effective from AY  ) The PLC does not see: – Dean recommendation – Chair letter re: impact of leave on dept. PLC never sees applicant’s WPAF Created by Suzanne Scott

Process, cont’d PLC’s recommendation is solely advisory to the Provost Provost (who sees PLC, Dean, and Chair letters) makes the sabbatical decisions CBA requires a minimum of 12% of eligible faculty receive sabbaticals each year Created by Suzanne Scott

PLC Rating of Applications Three ratings: Highly recommended Recommended Not recommended Created by Suzanne Scott

Highly Recommended Reasonably thorough, specific, and clear descriptions of the purpose and goals Indication how the goals would be achieved during the time proposed Potential benefits to the CSU (e.g., through research, scholarly and creative activity, instructional improvement, and/or faculty retraining) May include supporting documentation and/or itemized lists of needed CSU resources PLC agrees a high likelihood that the applicants in this category will achieve their goals Created by Suzanne Scott

Recommended Worthy project(s) Proposal does not address issues with the clarity or depth needed to highly recommend (e.g., clear description of project; benefits to CSU; likelihood of achieving goals) Created by Suzanne Scott, PLC Chair

Not Recommended Does not thoroughly or clearly address all the selection criteria Proposal raises concerns or questions about: – the overall potential feasibility, and/or – benefits of the plans, and/or – the likelihood of achieving the proposed goals Created by Suzanne Scott
