A: The National Health Service (Part 1) The National Health Services (NHS) It is responsible for health care for everyone in the UK, the treatment is free but there is a prescription charge for drugs and appliances such as a cervical collar, this charge not includes children and elderly people. Primary care provided by General Practitioners (GPs), nurses, dentists, pharmacists and opticians. They work in practices Practices are based in a surgery and look after the health of 1,000 to 15,000 people in their local community. Health education (such as smoking and diet) Run clinics Give vaccinations May perform minor surgery (removal of warts and moles) If a patient needs specialist care, the GP will make a referral to a consultant in secondary care.

A: The National Health Service (Part 2) Patients seen on an appointment basis Home visits are made when patients are housebound. Out of hours (OOH) It is a treatment provided by the local Primary Care Trust from 6pm to 8am which organizes shifts of GPs or locum GPs when someone is absent. B: The practice team (Part 1) A Typical GP practice consists of the following: 1. Receptionist Initial patient contact Making appointments Taking requests for repeat prescriptions Taking messages from patients and health providers Filling and scanning documents on to patient records 2. Practice manager finance and IT Supervises reception staff Hires locums Prepare practice development plan

B: The practice team (Part 2) Practice Nurses Asthma Diabetes Cardiovascular disease clinics One-to-one clinics for those who wish to give up smoking Health professionals are listed below: District nurse: Health visitor: Midwife: Physiotherapists

C: A GP’s day Below is a typical working day when the doctor is not on duty 8:00 am arrive check the OOH check urgent and non-urgent messages 8:30 check s from the health board and partners prepare for surgery 8:30 – 10:30 am morning surgery (10 min appointment) 6 last week, 2 two days ago, 4 on the day 10:30-10:55 am check messages with reception sign prescriptions and deal with repeated prescriptions 10:55-11:20 am coffee break with colleagues 11:20-11:30 am check home visit requests and divide up with colleagues 11:30 am – 1:00 pm home visits
