1.Understand the basic idea of Nutrition and Diet 2.Develop an understanding of food groups

A balanced diet provides all the essential nutrients for health, fitness, strength and wellbeing. Also maintains an energy balance Calories In = Calories Out Diet is defined as ‘the normal food we eat’ Q) What does diet mean?

Active people use more energy and therefore need more calories People who adopt a sedentary lifestyle (not much physical activity) and eat more calories than they use, tend to put on weight If you stop exercising it is important to keep a balance between the amount of calories taken in and the amount used up so you neither lose nor gain weight

Macro Nutrients- Form the biggest part of what we eat -Carbohydrates -Protein -Fats Micro Nutrients-Needed in smaller quantities Vitamins Minerals Water Fibre

Simple: Cakes Biscuits sweets Pasta Glucose glycogen Energy Complex Bread Pasta Rice Maintain our body’s energy stores. There are two types of carbohydrates:

Builds and repairs muscle Used for growth We only need 15% of our diet to be protein.

Fats help to provide concentrated sources of energy and help to insulate the body in cold weather. There are two main types: Saturated fats are usually obtained from animal sources, for example butter and lard. The exceptions are coconut and palm oils. Polyunsaturated fats come from vegetable sources, such as sunflower oil.

Insoluble - whole grain cereal and wholegrain bread helps to prevent constipation Soluble – oats, fruits and vegetables, helps to reduce blood cholesterol levels The main function of fibre is to keep the digestive system healthy and functioning properly.

Vitamin A - for vision Vitamin B - for energy production and stress reduction Vitamin C - to keep skin healthy Vitamin D - to help bones and teeth

Calcium Helps strength bones and teeth Calcium reduces the chance of getting osteoporosis. Iron Essential to the blood and the building of red blood cells. Lack of iron can lead to anaemia = tiredness/shortness of breath.

Maintains fluid levels Whenever you sweat. It prevents dehydration Accounts for half of body weight Essential to control body temperature

Question 1 Name both types of carbohydrate (other than simple and complex)

Question 2 Luke is a discuss thrower. For his event he would emphasise one of the macro nutrients in his diet. Which would it be?

Question 3 When we exercise, blood is sent to the working muscles. This means that less blood is available for digesting food, which is why we should not eat too close to exercise. What is this process known as?
