THE GREAT PLAINS Mostly flat, grassy land or plains Few trees Sometimes known as the Llano Estacado or Staked Plains Located on a high, flat plateau Rivers Red River, Pecos River, Brazos River Located in the Panhandle of Texas and reaches down south to the Rio Grande

THE GREAT PLAINS Home to Palo Duro Canyon and Caprock Canyons State Park These deep canyons were caused by water The Great Plains of Texas are the southern tip of the Great Plains of the United States Major cities in this region: Abilene, Lubbock, Amarillo, Odessa Vegetation found in this region: Cottonwood, sugarberry bush, coral honeysuckle

MOUTAINS AND BASINS Wide open spaces Rugged plateaus and desert mountains The ONLY place you will find mountains in TX Mountains are found in the western most part of Texas from the New Mexico border in the North to the Rio Grande in the South This region includes Big Bend National Park FUN FACT! The park got its name from the big bend of the Rio Grande along Texas’ border

MOUNTAINS AND BASINS The region is mostly desert Very cold at night and very hot during the day Major cities found in this region: El Paso, Big Bend, Marfa, Alpine Vegetation found in this region: Yucca, prickly pear cactus

NORTH CENTRAL PLAINS The North Central Plains are home to Texas’ Hill Country Hill Country was considered a holy place by Native Americans that lived there Made up of rolling hills Many springs are found here A series of aquifers are found here Aquifers- underground water collections ADD THIS TERM TO YOUR VOCABULARY LIST!

NORTH CENTRAL PLAINS Grassy landscape with many Cedar tress In the central part of this region there are large dome-shaped granite uprisings The largest is Enchanted Rock Dinosaurs lived in this region Fossils from different types of dinosaurs have been found here Small patches of wooded lands are scattered throughout this region These woods are the Cross Timbers because the woods cross the prairie

NORTH CENTRAL PLAINS Major cities found in this region: The soil is very rich and fertile Major cities found in this region: Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Fredericksburg, Kerrville Vegetation found in this region: Pecan and cedar trees

COASTAL PLAINS Begin at the beaches of the Gulf Coast and stretch west into the grassy plains Near the coast you will find: Barrier islands, marshes, bays, estuaries The area of the East Texas within the Coastal Plains is dense with pine forests Many areas are wet bottomlands along rivers Other parts are very dry and covered with thorny brush
