To provide members with information on what happens to Recyclable material collected at the kerbside from domestic properties. Objective

What Recyclable Materials are collected Kerbside Cardboard and Green Waste Cans and Small metal items Glass Bottles and Jars Paper Plastic Bottles / containers

 Grey wheelie bins:  Ash from fires, Cardboard and Green Waste. - Bulked up into large covered articulated lorries, normally on day of collection. - Taken to Woodhatch Farm Ellington, Huntingdonshire. - Composted and used as a Soil Improver or in Commercial Landscape works within 3 months of being collected. - In 2009/10 9,231 tonnes of material were composted and re-used. Cardboard and Green Waste

 Blue containers:  Basic Eddy Current Sort into 2 waste streams Aluminium & Steel - Normally Re-processed within 6 weeks. - Aluminium is reprocessed by “Alutrade” in Oldbury - Aluminium Cans made into cans mainly for drinks industry - Coated Cans mixed with other Aluminium products and used in signs or seating for large audiences. - Steel Cans & small metal items are reprocessed by “European Metal Recycling” at Biggleswade - Predominantly used to make Cans for drinks and food industries. - In 2009/ tonnes of Cans & small metal items were recycled. Cans and Small metal Items

 Blue Containers: - Bulked up and taken to Berryman’s in South Kirby, West Yorkshire. - Normally reprocessed within 8 weeks of collection. - Washed, Crushed into Cullet and sorted into colours. - Best Cullet used for new bottles and jars. - Surplus Green Cullet (import more green bottles than export) exported for making Wine bottles in wine growing E.U. countries. - Clean mixed Cullet used for Fibreglass Insulation. - Mixed colours & small cullet used as an aggregate substitute in construction industry. - In 2009/10 2,642 tonnes of glass were recycled. Paper  Red Containers: - Baled and taken to “Aylesford Newsprint”, Aylesford in Kent. - Normally reprocessed within 2 weeks of collection. - Aylesford only uses recycled, cleansed and pulped paper. - Pulped paper is compressed and dried to make new newsprint. - In 2009/10 2,642 tonnes of glass were recycled.

Plastic Bottles  Blue containers: - Preliminary sorting and mixing before being Baled and taken to “Choice Waste Management” in Biggleswade. - Normally reprocessed within 8 weeks of collection - Bottles washed and sorted into at least 9 different plastic types. - Sorted plastic materials are granulated. - Granulated materials used to make wide range Recycled products including most used by food industry, garden products and containers such as Recycling boxes and Wheeled bins. - In 2009/ tonnes of plastic bottles were recycled

Where the Materials are taken to  “Shanks” Materials Recycling Facility. - All collected materials are taken to the local facility at Furnace Park, Old Telford Way, Kettering. - Materials are checked for Quality – contaminates put into appropriate Recycling or Waste stream. - Basic processing - Glass, Cardboard & Green waste bulked up. - Cans, Paper and Plastics baled. - Materials frequently collected by Processors. - All materials have to have an Audit Trail. - Weights of all loads recorded. - Sample photos taken when required.

Contaminated Materials  Contaminated Materials sorted at “Shanks” site: - “Shanks” Furnace Park site licensed to take all materials collected by Kettering Borough Council. - Site closely scrutinised by “Environment Agency” - Not possible to export materials that are only suitable for Land filling. - Any contaminated materials are normally spotted when loads tipped. - Basic manual sort to pick out large items. - Mechanical sort for smaller items. - No materials are exported as there is a demand for the clean pre-sorted material collected. - None of the collected recyclates have been land filled.
