Recycling -What have we done -Paper -landfills -If we don’t -How to recycle -Where does it go By Madeline Palmer

What We Have Done The Earth is an amazing place. With all the spectacular sights, amazing opportunities and great people. However, what we (humans) have done to it is unspeakable. You might not realise it, but you have had a helping hand in this…

Paper Paper is one of the most common things that people waste. On average, one British citizen devourers 4.48 40-foot trees a year. Most people live till about 85 ; my lifetime supply would be 380.8 40-foot trees. Scientifically speaking, as there are 320-412 BILLION trees in the amazon rainforest and 7 billion people on the planet. It would only take 85 years to demolish the entire rainforest and 2,253,600,000,000 more trees.

Landfills For those who don’t know, a land fill is a place where we dump (literally) all of our waste or things that unfortunately cannot be recycled or reused. It is complexly built like a hole in the ground. Landfills are designed - unlike dumps – carefully and are monitored often. They separate waste from the surrounding environment (air, rain etc.)

Bins In our local area(Newton Burgoland) the bin men come to collect our bins on a Tuesday.  Red box = plastic  Yellow bag = cardboard and paper  Green box = glass  Large green bind = garden (grass, weeds etc.) The next week, it will change to the big black bins - used for waste.

If We Don’t… If we don’t recycle, the world will be in a chaotic state, even worse that it is now. Your local park will be trashed, your garden covered. Recycling helps those things a lot. When we recycle anything, it will go to be made into something new.

How To Recycle Recycling is an easy way to help our planet, you simply put: Plastic, cardboard, glass, paper or any garden waste in to the correct bin. The bin men will come to collect it, that’s all you need to do as once it’s reached its location, work will be started and a journey to reduce, reuse and recycle will begin.

What happens now? So things like glass is molded into things like: wine glasses/bottles and jars, now I’m going to walk you through one of the most common objects that we recycle… cardboard.

Once it has reached the recycling facility, weather it’s from factories shops or offices it is sent to a waste paper merchant. Here it is made into large bales, this is so it’s prepared for transportation to the paper mill. To begin the paper mill process, a fork lift transfers the bales onto a conveyer belt, the conveyer belt conveyers them to the pulper. The idea for the pulper is for water and chemicals to mix with the cardboard to make a soggy pulp. This pulp is de- inked, cleaned and dried into flat rolls of paper. Finally, the freshly made paper is cropped for the customers who do what they want with it.
