Defining Rhetoric The ART of Persuasion. Language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience, but often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content.

Someone who studies/does Rhetoric is called a Rhetor or Rhetorician. Discussion Question: Knowing this definition what does it mean for a question to be “rhetorical”? Discussion Question:What’s something you have seen that you immediately realized was intended to persuade you?

Ancient Greece & Rome

Corax & Tisias “The first Sophists” “The Raven & The Crow” The lawsuit: "Corax and his pupil Tisias were reputedly the first Sophists. Like many young men with an appetite for worldly success, Tisias sought training from Corax in the hope of being able to sue his way to wealth and influence. Wishing to make sure he was not duped by his teacher, Tisias contracted to pay Corax only after he had actually won a law suit. On this condition his training commenced and soon enough was over. But Tisias became complacent. Years went by and Tisias brought no suits against anyone. Corax had been willing to wait to be paid, but not forever, so he brought a suit against Tisias to recover his fee" -- Britannica.com

Sophists Greece: Every man must defend himself in court. Sophist taught how to do this. Sophist curriculum consisted of analyzing poetry, defining parts of speech, and instruction on argumentation styles. They taught their students how to make a weak argument stronger and a strong argument weak. Popular schools run by Gorgias & Isocrates For the ancient Greeks, a “sophist” was a man who manipulated the truth for financial gain.
